Thanks for the help in advance guys...

So I just picked up a 96' XR100. Got the bike home, and was having issue with the bike bogging out when you'd open the throttle. Especially if you whacked it open it would almost die. It eventually started running fine and had some kicks for an hour or so before it acted up again. This is when I figured it was the carburetor.

When I had it up on the stand I checked the oil, and it was filled a little high, and pulled the plug and the threads were wet with oil it looked like. Put a new plug in, drained the oil and put freshy in at the correct level. Still died out.

So I just took the tank off, drained that. Took the petcock off, a little gunk but nothing crazy. Took the float bowl off? And there was a good amount of gunk at the bottom of that mini pan. After I cleaned dumped it, it looked like there was aluminum oxides in it?? Was weird (never opened up a carburetor before). Pulled all the little parts out that i was comfortable cleaning and putting back the way they were. Carb sprayed the shit out of everything in there. Seems to be cleaner, but the gaskets look a little worn and maybe some of those needles or jets could be replaced?

Where can I find the explanations of the screws on that carb? I looked all over and dont have a manual yet to refer to. I've checked thumper forums and anything that looked like a diagram or something would be posted...nothing...

Now this brings me to another question...A rebuild kit is around 35 bucks. I've found a brand new carb for 23! My first assumption is since its on fleabay its garbage....or is it??

And when I put fresh gas in (havent yet)...If I put 91 in it, would I have to adjust the carb depending on the pump gas I put in it?

What you guys think is the best route?

Blow the jets out with air and make sure the holes in them are clear and it should run fine ,as long as the bike doesn't need rings..
If it stalls when you open the throttle ,it is caused by the main jet..

Can you adjust the main jet or just clean or replace it?

I put it back together and made it worse...lol

Takes about 15ish kicks to get it to kinda start, then it will kinda run on full choke. Fack me...what should I try?

You should be able to blow everything out with air/If not a small piece of wire through the hole in the center of the jet and then blow it out.
It should run then, but i would blow all the jets and nozzle out plus the fuel line..

All I can think of is you didn't really clean it well enough, maybe even moved some grime around and clogged things up worse. Get in there with a brush and mineral spirits and go to town, then blast it with air.

You've only got a couple jets to deal with, so instead of poking them with safety wire, just buy new jets.

Try your local shop in Napa area. Also clean the body not just the jets. If it's metal get looking good and dirt free. Take your time and if you can try an ultrasonic cleaner. Make sure all rubber is properly sealing too. Once that is done then try again. A diagram should be found at carlsalter.com lots of motorcycle manuals there.

Thanks for the link, bookmarked that one. I purchased a rebuild kit and having a friend show me the right way to do everything when it comes in. I took it apart about 5 times with no luck. :x

Any idea what comes in those rebuild kits. OEM honda stuff is pretty well priced as far as new gaskets. I would pull all the jets and throw them in chemdip or some card/contact cleaner. Then rinse it down with hot water and blow it all out.

a new carb on ebay goes for cheap. i had the same issue after cleaning the original carb out over many years and i finally just replaced it. its not an oe honda carb but it works like brand new.
and be careful spraying carb cleaner on the floats and rubber gaskets - no bueno

In order to truly clean the carb, you must must must pull the jets out in order to clean the passages out thoroughly. If you can get your hands on a clymers manual or download the 98-03 version for free here

When i did my carbs on the gs, I experimented with using pin sol as a soaking cleaner. It worked well for me. Pull all your jets and then soak in a tub of pine sol over night. Then take a tooth brush to it, some alcohol or carb cleaner and give it a once over. Blow it all dry with compressed air especially the passages. Reassemble with new gaskets and if it were me id just buy two new jets. Be sure your air mixture screws are set correctly as well.

^ Thanks for the link I've been creepin on BBR products for the future :D

Update - I gave up and took the bike to Parriott in St Helena. Luckly he has the EXACT same bike as me, just sexy flat tracked out!

One day Ill learn how to NOT fuck up a carb ;) haha. Thanks for all the tips and links guys!

Ya, I went crazy with that carb cleaner and ruined the original float gasket...Luckily I had a new one in the mail so I wasnt that mad...But now I know :teeth

UPDATE!

Brian fixed the carb issue and now it runs like a champ! I guess I had put the needle, seal, and washer in wrong and it was getting flooded with gas? Either way Im glad I gave it a shot and I was pretty close to succeeding.

BUT NOOOOOOW, I was riding and the clutches release point came closer and closer to the grip. So close that if it was pulled in all the way it almost would be free. Then while riding it made an evil grinding noise and then I couldn't get the clutch free.

Couldn't find neutral so I picked up the rear end and walked it back to the garage. I tightened up the slack in the line to where there was zero free play in the lever, pulled it in and it wouldn't free the clutch up. Check the cable, it didn't break.

Now I'm assuming that I broke the clutch push rod, or broke a clutch plate? Either way I gotta pull the case off and look inside for something obvious...

I'm so sad my extreme joy is halted by another issue and I've only ridden it a total of 30 mins in the past 3 weeks I've owned it :(
