We're talking Old Testament here.

Yesterday around 5PM riding on 1 southbound between Santa Cruz and Watsonville. Traffic bunched up and slowed in a few spots so when the speed dropped below about 35mph I proceeded off between the cages. No prayer, no particular relationship with any deity...

...but it was like Moses parting the Red Sea must have been. As far as I could see in front of me people moved over and made room. It wasn't that there was just room, you could actually see 'em getting over. What a delight! So to all of the folks stuck in cages last night a big :thumbup.

So just lucky, or is there some way to get this to catch on elsewhere? :teeth

I've had that happen at dusk a couple of times on 580 heading back to LibMo... it was amazing! :teeth

But I have to admit, I was expecting swarms of locusts from your thread title... :x

CHP bikes are aggressive splitters so I'm guessing they might have parted based on that assumption.

Coming back from Arizona all was good till we hit I5; had I been on a bike I'm guessing I could have shaved an hour off the 13 hour drive by splitting, (or "sharing" if you prefer).

The lower limit for trucks, (unlike AZ where trucks are allowed to drive at the auto limit), really screws up traffic on I5.

With my headlight modulator on I've enjoyed scaring the crap out of single-person-in-the-car commuter lane cheaters on NB101 through Santa Rosa recently. The quick lane change to the right, the covert glances reeking of guilt and then the relief when they realize I'm not the CHP. :laughing

Didn't even think of that. Turns out I was on an R1200RT. Guess it never occurred to me that the headlight/bike profile is distinctive. Likin' tha' bimmer even more :teeth

every now and again on my morning commute (westbound 4), it seems like i'm in a third lane, there's so much room. more than enough room in either lane.
makes the idiots easier to avoid.

I've had that happen before, usually on bumpy roads where it looks like my headlight is flashing to the drivers.

Sometimes I think it's just a group of courteous and aware drivers that happen to be together. It's always nice.

+1 on that modulator action. I can't count the number of times people pull over into the next lane for me. 'Doesn't always work, but it's nice when it does.

Were you riding with a staff?

While I still get a few fools that try to close the gap, I've perceived the same as op. In the last year or so drivers seem anxious to make room and more riders appear to be encoraging the courtesy by offering up a wave. It's not unusual to have someone crowd the bike then have the next car make room. Perhaps by acknowledging the courtesy the prick trying to own the road will feel some shame:dunno

I bestow upon thee the Moto-wave, may it be a benediction upon your day.

+1 to that. Tux and his graciousness has made it possible for you to pass through the masses with his benedictal waves.

I hope you waved to all the nice peeps in their cages...:thumbup

Indeed. Moto-waves liberally given, no mirrors clipped, positive waves all over the place.

Probably as good a place as any to point out -- there's a thin line between the "thanks for making room" moto-wave and the "see ya, stuck in traffic cagin' loser" bite-me-wave.
