A friend crashed my car. How much should I ask for the damage?

OP, you should call Habbas and Associates. You might be due some compensation...

Seriously, $1,500 and call it a day.

Yeah...wtf? $7k to repair a car worth around $2k?

I believe that's called a "we don't want your fucking business so we'll give you a ridiculous quote" price.

As others noted, it's pretty humorous that the OP is evening asking this question. You're not a friend I would want to have.

Hmm, I misread maybe. He said "bill came out to," which I took to mean that the car had been repaired already (not an estimate, etc.).

If he's your friend... I'd just ask him to pay for your deductible if you have insurance. If not, then letting him drive your car is a risk that you are 100% responsible for. Accidents happen, that is why insurance is necessary.

I'm putting myself in your shoes, if I were in this scenario and it was my good friend Steve, then I'd have him pay for half of what I paid for the car. So, $750 seems about right.

$750 is for him crashing your car (he pays)
$750 is for you letting him drive your car without full-coverage insurance (you pay)

Just my two cents

Sounds about right. Letting someone drive your car when all you have is liability is...silly.

If you paid $7000 to repair a $1500 car, your friend has every right to tell you to "Go forth and multiply" if you think they should pay that.

Your car, if it has been repaired, is still worth $1.5-$2k.

If you friend is kind, they would give you blue book. If you are kind, you would ask them to pay you what you paid for the car, at most, i.e. $1.5k.

Please, in the name of all things holy, tell me the $7k was a quote, not a repair bill for work performed.

If this thing was totalled out, as it should have been, your friend would owe you for the tow(s) and estimate expenses, but you would owe them for the salvage value from the junk yard.

So lets say tows+estimate = $400, salvage value = $300, I would ask your friend for $1600.

If it was a true friend their safety and well being is all that would matter to me. If it was a true accident and not negligent then I am good with that. I would not ask my "friends" for a dime. unless he was acting an asshat behind the wheel. If he offers to cover deductible then cool but I would not ask for it and this is why.

If I could not afford to pay for my deductible or replacement of a car I would not have let anyone drive it. you took that chance when you let him drive it.

.

Haha, took me a second, funny quote!

I love it when someone starts a thread and then doesn't respond to questions or comments. Makes it feel very troll-y.

And I'm with the others. First, I hope to god you mean the repair estimate was $7000, not the repair bill. Please tell me you did not spend seven grand to repair a $1500 car.

Second, if the repair cost is higher than the replacement cost, the friend should pay the replacement cost. You have no right to expect them to pay $7K to fix a $1.5K car.

Third, if you paid $1500 for it a couple years ago, and that was fair market value at the time, then you again have no right to ask your friend to pay more than that. In fact, it would have to be less. Like around $1200-1300. Unless of course you got a screaming deal and got a $2000-2500 car for $1500, in which case you can ask fair market value.

But no matter what, you cannot ask for the repair cost. If you had insurance, they'd total it and give you fair market value, which is all you can/should get from your friend.

DaveT// I can't any other websites other than work related at my work. So no barfing for me while I am at work.

You are right. The $7000 was the repair estimate. Sorry for the misinformation.

The fair market value for 91 740 turbo right now is between $2200 and $2400 and I got this car two years ago for $1500.

The guy don't have an insurance. I have asked him for $1900.

Christ man, you should have asked for $1879.32. WTF?

Good. We were all hoping you hadn't already had it repaired for that!

In that case, that seems pretty reasonable, to me at least.
