Some guy asks me what I ride yesterday as I'm grabbing coffee before work. Tell him I'm on my drz, and that I also just picked up a 2011 gsxr600 (of course I called it a gixxer)..but he chuckled for his response to that as he replied he rides an r6.......whats the stigma or whatever with them? I just got this thing for less than what I paid for my drz! I'm stoked, and can't wait to get some new rubber on this thing and ride! Oh and please if you know the good informations about this bike, please let me know what I need to!

Well, too bad for him cuz EVERYONE else looks down on 600 riders. It's like claiming to be the bum with the best shopping cart. :twofinger

Proper pronunciation should be "Gixxah" or "Gixxur"?.

I've always wondered about that too but for some reason, the GSX has a really popular past with being modded, stretched swingarms, lights, turbos, etc.

Just a do a comparison search between gsxrs, cbrs, and r6s. You will find much more absurdly modified gsxrs compared to its competitors. Much like the civics of the 600 underworld.

There is a stretched-swing arm example on my local Craigslist the guy is calling a Gigster !

From what I understand, years ago Suzuki had super-easy financing for less than good credit. The GSXR became the bike for the less-well-off to get, and that started a trend. After that, like any trend, financing didn't really matter, it just became a symbol, attractive to a lot of squids because of that.

I ride one as well, it's actually a pretty decent bike out of the box and I have no real complaints about it other than the fugly exhaust, but that's any stock exhaust on most bikes. It's a Japanese sport bike, friendlier for the street than the Yamahas IMO, not quite as tame as the Hondas, and you can get them with some nice little features out of the box as well.

GSXRs have a minor social stigma within the sportbike community because although they are stone reliable, refined, balanced, and hugely successful in amateur and pro racing, they tended to be the bike of choice for amped-up, testosterone-fueled young men with more aggression and courage than common sense.

Why? Because they dominated AMA racing and bike shootouts and were often the least expensive of the Japanese brands.

See the guys with the colored mohawks on their helmets? Riding GSXRs.
Hear the guys bouncing the revs off the limiter? Riding GSXRs.
"Stuntahs" and sportbike "crews"? Riding GSXRs.
Calling a GSXR and "gixxer"? Riding GSXRs.

In the era before traction control there was no better bike for trackdays or amateur racing. But on the street they were the bike of choice for the most annoying riders.

Before Josh Hayes started winning on a Yamaha, GSXRs won a lot of titles. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday...

Financing and all that might of been a factor but the Gixxers were class leading hooligan capable bikes. Only last few that the R6 has taken the mantle and truth be told the Gixxer is still a better hooligan bike but the R6 clearly wins on Sunday. Hands down the most annoying bike that does not have an HD mark on it on the road. But in the DoubleAughts that was the Gixxer.

I still say "G-S-X-R" ... lol... otherwise it is "Jix-urr".

Back in the old country it's pronounced Jixx'suh :laughing

It's too bad the stigma. Gixxers are generally great track machines and well balanced.
