Problem is, there can be a range and the range can be huge. As in, unacceptable to woohoo!

However, I don't ask directly as most companies won't tell you until you're at least well into the process.

Yeah, tech industry is way more variable than mine. Me I can predict, with no research at all, within +/- 20K of what the salary will be. With research, that narrows to +/- 10K.
