ABS repair... ABS cement vs plastic welding?

Best to repair something with the same material if you can. It generally works best. And solvents work as well. Or an adhesive of he same basic composition as the original material.

I use 1-2 layers of fiberglass on the backside to reinforce glued ABS joints. I've never tried plastic welding because that solution worked so well.

I fixed track plastics with sanding the ABS on the back of both sides and using material from a sock soaked in two part epoxy. It never came apart till the next time I crashed.

No resin. I lightly sanded the ABS. Apply a layer of ABS cement, lay down fiberglass, and saturate the fiberglass with more ABS cement. That’s it. I used the black ABS cement from HomeDepot which I think has a lot of ABS in it.

I too have done exactly this with great results including reconstructing large swaths of missing area from original bodywork. Worked great and held up well.
