Advice on purchasing a Ducati Monster

too expensive :<

I know it's not a Monster, but why not the older-gen Speed Triples? Their sss may not be as sexy as the Monster's, but at least they are sss and in my opinion, make for the best street bikes ever.

I haven't gotten on one of those yet, how do they ride?

Any reliability problems with the s2r 1000?

Thanks guys.

Beware of expanding plastic fuel tanks (damn ethanol:rant). And make sure to get the RED key. Other than that, they are solid bikes. :thumbup

I had an S4 (not R), 916 power. Everyone I know said, Don't buy a Ducati. But I knew everything. So I bought one. And I was pleasantly surprised. In 5 1/2 years, the longest I've ever kept a bike, the only issue was the Sprag clutch. It never failed to start, but it started cranking slower. $100 for some Ducati wreckers in Florida, I was good to go. The valve adjustment never changed. You hear a lot of horror stories from people, usually, those people have never actually owned one.

I've ridden several Monsters, including an 1100. In my opinion, the watercooled 4 valve is a much better bike. It had an honest 95hp at the wheel, 67 lb ft of torque. I also had a handlebar kit, and it was an all day rider, although the foot pegs seemed too far apart.

Totally true! :thumbup

But pay attention to the sobering remarks from those who have owned one, just sayin. ;)

Nice review. I'll be browsing craigslist for these as well :thumbup thanks

I had an 07' and now ride an 09' after the earlier one went in a river. Awesome bikes with a lot of power. You can grab the 05-07 for $5-6k if you keep an eye out. There isn't much that goes wrong with them, and whatever does is easy to fix. You can check the valves on your own as well. The only problem is all that power makes you wanna drive like an ass.

I have an S2R 800 and absolutely love my bike!

Sure, it isn't the fastest (or the hardest braking) but it's a fun little go-getter with enough oomph to ride all kinds of terrain: twisties, track, goat, distance, two-up. I've done them all and had a great time. The biggest gripe I have is the goddamn plastic tank. I also don't even consider it to have a back brake, but that's a detail I don't miss.

Let me know if you have questions. Oh, and I can do 90% of my own maintenance - including valves*.

*Thank you Moto Shop!

Oh yeah, Speed Triple. My brother currently has an 01 or 02. 955. It seems like a solid, reliable bike. But to me, it feels soft. Everything from the suspension, the brakes and the throttle response. I owned a 955 Daytona that seemed much more responsive But he likes it anyway. Anyway, just my opinion. I liked my S4 much more. But I also usually get rid of things before they start to break.

Was it 01 or earlier that still had metal tanks? Thats the only other thing to look for. Unless you want a 749/999. That with some bars would be nice.

I have an S4RS, 32k miles, no issues. Love it, and it's an excellent commute bike, that I've also ridden all day long many times. A bunch of bikes in my garage, and this is the one I usually pick when leaving the house. I have put on a Termi exhaust, and yes it's a little too loud, but not ridicously so.

Wife has a 695, that I also enjoy riding. Handling is sweet, power is adequate, but I wish it had a little more brake.
