I just did the CABDR-North on my KTM 890R and really noticed the weight in some of the expert rocky sections (I am getting older and weaker). So I started looking at the 690/701's and ran across the AJP PR7 on YouTube. Has anyone here delt with this bike and getting it street legal here?? Really looks like a sweet machine but only comes for closed course in the States.

Check out this bike and price tag. Only downfall is that Everett WA is the closest dealer.

I'm still looking at the 690/701's for sure. But you probably have another $3K put in it at least. The price of the PR7 had all the options for a lower price point and I think it is also around 40lbs lighter. It just really caught my attention and made me wonder if anyone in BARF had gone for this yet!
Thanks for the input!
BTW, just looked at your Corrizo plains pics! What a great area!!

Paging @Lunchbox to the courtesy phone. Aaron owned one in New Mexico until some scum decided to take it.

You may be out a little more money to build out a 690/701 unless you can find a used one that someone else built out. The real question boils down to the devil we know vs. the one we don't. The 690/701 is a mature platform and is quite a popular option in this ride space. There's a ton of resources and support available to keep these bikes running, plus parts availability and aftermarket. Seems like the AJP (and Kove, for that matter) as relative newcomers to the scene, are going to have a sense of the unknown. What's parts availability look like? How's aftermarket support?

FWIW, I have a friend who currently lives in London. She rode her AJP halfway around the world. I’ll dig out her blog for you this evening.

Getting it street legal in CA would be a challenge. But really no different from say plating a YZ450F, or KTM 300 EXC, or something like that.

Some states with fewer restrictions could allow a plate. So one option is to have one plated in a different state and just ride it in CA with that other state's registration. Not sure about the current situation, but Colorado, Nevada, and Utah used to be pretty easy to plate a dirt bike.

Maybe ... if it had >7500 miles on it, was plated/registered in some other state, and you bought it and tried to get it registered in CA ... that might work.

Looks like CA registration might be a PITA:

There are several sold through ADVrider from $5k to $10-12K so there you have it.

EDIT: and the perfect answer to your question is a KTM 640 Adventure of-course..... ask me how I know.... :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
Here is a smoking good deal on a low milage one

EDIT 2:
Here is the main ADVrider thread on it https://advrider.com/f/threads/ajp-pr7.1013515/page-241

I would consider the KOVE 450 if you are going that route. It will probably cost much less in the long run to operate.
I was looking at the Kove also but the AJP really caught my eye! I am partial to the KTMs but wanted more info on the AJP.

I had never heard of the 7,500 mile thing before. I think the 690/701 is looking better all the time. And thanks for the link to ADV rider!!!

That motor looks mighty familiar...if I had to guess I'd say that's a slightly "worked over" Husky (Cagiva made) red top motor. This may just be a re-badged early 2000's era Husqvarna? If so, I know a few people (including myself) who have nothing but good things to say about the powerplant.

You know your motors! Yes it is an early model motor from Husky. They say it is bullet proof and super dependable. Think it would be an awesome bike, but after reading some of the above input and articles, I don't think it is what I am willing to get at this time. Think I'll start looking for the 690/701s after the holidays.

I loved my KTM 890 Adventure R until I fell over tried picking it up! You feel all 470 pounds as it lays flat making it a pain in the back. I keep thinking a Yamaha WR 250 or Honda 300 just makes more sense.

I have my eye on the Kawasaki Versys-X 300, but doubt that’d be much fun on Mt Patterson, or that it would withstand Mr MTERK’s expert riding for more than 15 minutes. :laughing

in any event, I’m hopeful we’ll be treated in this thread to some pics of the mighty KTM890R on expert rocky NorCal BDR sections. :ride

John, if I can find it I will send you my review of the 300X versus. It pretty much got me fired from CityBike. I’d be liking at the CF moto RX4 or 6 and talk with MeanDad about the upgrades.

Yes it is heavy to pick up. I thought I was in shape but found out quickly as my legs turned to mush that I wasn't! Never had an issue picking it up before but I've never been this old and out of shape before!!
