Ali Baba IPO

LOL at brokers. My broker said the same thing to me 14 years ago about an IPO. Too bad it dropped to a third of opening value and never recovered.

Brokers love IPO's because they get a fixed # of shares to pass out amongst their "privileged" clients, allowing them to get a commission on each sale. So of course it's a "sure thing" in their opinion.

Simple brokers are next to pointless in this day & age.

Probably not. but I might... SMALL $$ ONLY, and after the inevitable post release drop. sound familiar?
Interesting that they chose to list NYSE at the top of an over extended, it's over extended, I don't give a hang what anybody else says, bull market.
Also interesting that none of the lead banks are known for being particularly tech oriented. They are the ones going to win big, here.
I've only recently begun to start Amazoning, and it's hard to imagine how someone could beat their business model. I wonder what kind of crap the Chinese sell to themselves?
GL if you go...

ignore your broker - he's an idiot or knows better and is scamming you for a quick commission.

any broker that told me any investment is a "sure thing" would get fired on the spot. there is no such thing.

you don't even know what price you're buying at. if it pops 100% first day, and you buy after the pop, is it still a sure thing? no.

Moves more goods than Amazon and Ebay combined?? wtf? :wtf Must be a total monopoly.

Now of course a lot of barfers are going to say I am crazy but Ali Baba is huge and the world has been using them for many years. When I used to move pocket bikes I would order from them directly. Two weeks later a sea container full of pocket bikes would arrive at the dock and I had to go pick them up. Ali Baba is the real deal and worth at least a look at. I would invest in them but I am currently saving up for GoPro IPO.

I see. How seamless was the process? Port of Oakland? maybe they need an IPO for logistics upgrades. If the world has been using them for years, is their market saturated? Where do they want to get 'bigger'? Why would they risk their favorable regulatory environment by listing NYSE, and maybe inviting protectionist American influence onto their BoD?
Worth $140 billion? That is a lot of product..

GoPro an American company?

How'd you do on the pocket bikes?:teeth

What are they both going to be available to the public at? Getting in pre-ipo or for the initial offer wont happen for most of us.

I don't see GoPro doing well. Seems very niche and competitors pop up with cheaper versions. Seems like a cash out scenario.

Alibaba is a huge deal, it's already one of the largest internet companies on the planet. Entopic whats the big deal with GoPro? Riding the hype wave? I also don't really see huge upside in their business unless they pull off a pretty massive pivot, but I suppose there may be some opportunity to ride the wave of retail investor hype during a post-IPO pop.

agreed

you have a line on them?

Sadly no.

Oh god the pocket bike craze was a good one for me. I bought those damn things a sea crate at a time for $90.00 and sold them for 170.00+ at the flea market. The bikes themselves were POS and needed serious work if you wanted to ride it more then 10 times. I think the worst part about the whole thing was that folks bought them thinking it was a toy and get very upset with me when they realized it needed to be maintained which most of them had no clue on how to do. I got out because I had so many people threaten to beat the shit outta me for selling them a bad product when they were the ones that didn't read the manual. I had one guy attempt to sue me because he wheelied it off a curb and forgot to lock tight the wheel screws down which on impact bounced the front tire off the bike. They guy was covered in rug burn and I laughed which probably didn't help.

The process with Ali Baba was so damn easy and their webiste was very smooth. The whole process was like ordering stuff on Amazon but in Costco sizes.

Haven't you learned a damned thing? Speculation baby! I see GoPros all over the place and I can't get away from their advertising which means investors can't as well. Hype, buy, stock goes up, sell!

Yeah GoPro is pretty played-out IMO. Should of done it a couple yrs ago.

If you are liking GoPro but have not gotten into Ambarella you are already behind fyi

Alibaba is huge! i'm surprised most folks in the US have never heard of them.

As for Gopro, I don't see a long run. After awhile people will start to realize how lame their videos are and move on.

If they can transition to a red bull media house-esque studio... there is lots of potential. (It's assumed that RBMH brings in about $2B in revenue for RBgmbh, since they're privately held it's hard to get solid numbers but it's estimated that RBgmbh sold about 3.5-4B cans)

I can't comment yet on their CES long term potential and respective gains.

They have managed to form a niche with some devout followers.

yeah but RB availability and profit per can is insane. I gather it costs pennies for a can of RB that they sell for $3. Plus the volume on RB is very high.

Obviously I don't know how much Go pro is buying the cameras in china for, but the profit margin can't compare to sodas.

Their niche market is small, not many people want to strap on a batwing suit and go dive off a mountain.

RBMH is a subsidy that doesn't receive financing from RBgmbh - RBMH is still a $2B company stand alone. As a whole RBgmbh is an $8B company.

That is the transition GoPro will have to make to become a long term media company.

Oh the total margin differentiation of the 2 products is night and day. Just look at development costs alone. Red Bull sure as hell doesn't have 250+ engineers on payroll.

obviously I am a vested interest party in this and hope they do very well
