AMA/DMG/Manufacturers 'Sploding

not having 1000's be the premier class is pretty ridiculous. seems to work just fine for every other market out there. the comment from Mel Harris about Nascar-style of entertainment prioritizing the racer first, sponsors second and manufacturers third is pretty spot on. as a motorsports fan, i like close racing as much as the next guy, but i also understand it just fine when one team (such as suzuki now) dominates. it might not be as entertaing at that moment but neither is any sport when there's a blow out. sorry Tiger Woods, golf is too boring with you winning so much, so you can't go to the gym or practice anymore until your 30lbs overweight and can't bench press more than 100lbs (which is pretty much my view of the machines running in moto-st... :laughing)

I'm loving all this, it's about time somebody stuck it to the man. :laughing

Wow this should change the face of the 650 twin market in the future.

400 pound minimum weight .....eeek

The class itself may be in doubt if....

The Light class, the 75 hp, we have the SV650. That may or may not be discontinued in another year or so.

How would this effect the club racing scene, if the professional road racing eliminates the litre bike? I would have to assume, since the rest of the world will still be racing "Superbikes", the 1000cc sportbike will continue to be produced. But if the big teams are focused on supporting 600cc bikes and such, would the product offerings and race support for the bigger bikes drop off? It seems like it would get more costly to run a litre bike. Any word on the 450's being in their plan?

yep, pretty much like taking Formula 1 and saying, screw all that carbon fiber, titanium, and 20,000rpm engines... let's use full sized 3500lb coupes and carburated pushrod V8's. oh, wait a second...

But where is the fun in driving a Formula 1 car (with all of the fancy stuff on it) in a ccw circle:wtf

anyone else think Moto-ST's HP limits r a joke? i cant think of any popular racing class that has a limit such as this (ignoring spec classes of course). even NASCAR doesnt have a HP limit. applying such a thing to AMA will kill the organization. wat manufacture would spend millions on R&D to build a better bike if it could only put out 120HP in competition?

DMG needs to take more than a few pages from motorcycle organizations that work, even if most of them arent current in the US. hell, isnt MotoGP in the top5 most viewed for all spectator sports world-wide??

oh, and if we need a resurgence of Harley and Buell to make the AMA play to a better audience... well i guess ill jus stop watching. maybe living in CA makes us more partial to the Japanese manufacturers, but still.

wera and ccs do the HP limit (loudon too?) and it works fine. They just can't strangle the bikes with super low HP limits. Also, the issue of major factories having to do tons of rebuilds on near stock bikes because of OEM parts, while being an issue, should cut down costs as privateers aren't going to rebuild as often and should keep racing more competitive as some riders like May have done quite well on "non factory" bikes.

And, while it might put a bit a slow down in the major factories as far as R&D, most major series are going to that now anyhow (Canadian, Australian, BSB, etc) and the racing is still great to watch and companies still come out with pumped bikes every year. Afterall, they've still got Moto Gp and WSB to dump money into.

Now as for not having 1000's at the focus... On the flip side, seeing something like BOTT come back wouldn't be half bad. That was some great racing! Although, I don't remember many non-racers/riders in the crowd at old AMA events really caring if a Harley or Ducati won with McCarthy or Montano.

Well at least someone could make a few bucks selling those Nascar hats with the fake mullets coming out the back!!

Hey just think, we might get AMA highlights that rival NASCAR's current highlights... fist fights followed by helmet throwing and crap load of mullets to boot!! :loco

Nobody is watching AMA now. Hence the changes.

true, but the real question is why? WSBK was nearly dead about 5-6 years ago, sure they ended up adopting a spec tire, but that's about all it needed to make the racing "more competitive and entertaining".

after reading those articles, it sure sounds like the 2009 superbike rules were looking to achieve some similar parity here. the idea of running 600's might do that here, but how weak would it be for the world's largest market for open class sport bikes to not have a decent race series showcasing them?
