This is a really nice version and a massively insane stunt. Nobody would do that today.

I can't say about this specifically, but in other ones, they would build the structure (the rail car in this case) out of balsa wood. Which blows up nicely and carries far less risk. Having never encountered balsa bigger than a toy glider, its hard to imagine that much of it. But, there you go. Blowing up a balsa box is like blowing up a styrofoam one. That explosive is certainly dangerous, but that stunt can be done "safely".
