Another GoPro killer with built in GPS

4K is only worth it if the lens is big enough to capture enough light to maximize pixel differentiation. Which I kind of doubt for an action cam. Shoot a 4K video and then play it on a 4K tv and a regular hdtv. If there isn't much difference, it was a waste to shoot it in 4K

I've yet to see any GoPro killers. Some are close, or arguably as good, but still haven't seen one that is unambiguously better.

If you want one that's actually aerodynamic, there are several better choices

I've captured 4k on my friend's Hero 3 and compared it to 1080 on the same camera. 4k looks much better even when played on a 1080 monitor. Turns out, it's due to chroma subsampling. A 1080p actually interpolates pixels, whereas 4k reduced to 1080 gives every single pixel full color data and therefore looks far better. Thus why 8k on a 4k TV would look better than 4k on a 4k tv.

With regards to the lens - as long as the image sensor is exposed to the light why would it matter? Does the lens area have a pixel limitation?

Honestly... I have a DJI Osmo and Inspire 1 and that 4k camera > GoPro... and it doesn't have the fish eye effect, so it's a normal image...

If DJI released just the camera and a rugged housing it would eat GoPro for breakfast... unfortunately they only come in a gimbal setup.

GoPro's price premium ain't what it used to be, given how many great alternatives exist. I also view the action cam fad along similar lines as the DSLR fad from years ago... People bought it because society said - "hey cool thing, buy this" - without really considering that they didn't even take photos or make movies.

I bought a pristine untouched display model Sony HDR-AS200V from Adorama for around $125. For 1080p at 60 frames, it has been absolutely kick ass for the price. Pop a piece of 3M's version of industrial removable velcro on the camera case / side of a face shield, and we're off to the races... No bullshit mounts or anything to deal with.

And here's yet another with a built in GPS by Sony:

Looking for an easy way to overlay speed onto the videos but I don't want to invest in a dedicated lap timer.

Thats what I wanted too. But turns out the VIRB has a GPS refresh rate of just 1Hz. Too low to be any value. Thats why I dropped the plan of buying one. 10Hz would have been ideal. I can get rid of all Go Pros, lap timers, etc etc.

We'll just have to wait I guess.

I still rely on my ancient Contour + for this. Yeah, the image quality isn't up to GoPro standards, but I get the map overlay feature, which is awesome. It's even interactive, so you can drag your location along the map route to jump to that part of the video. Obviously with speed and elevation as well. Plus it has a far better form factor than the GoPro. You can barely notice the Contour on my helmet.

Too bad they went under.

That sounds like a nice feature. Do you use this for commuting?

I'm looking for a cheap one for "just in case" purposes while commuting and don't think I'd care to make cool videos for youtube or whatever.

The form factor like you mentioned is also a big plus.

How's the GPS refresh rate on the Contour +2? If it's more than 5khz or more it might be worth looking for a used one.
And does it overlay speed etc right on the video?

So much fancy stuff that I all find pointless. I've been using the original GoPro HD since it came out 5(?) years ago.

My only complaint is battery life. I have a 2 hour commute. In fact, if the only thing they did was give me enough internal battery to record for 3 hours, I'd buy a new camera tomorrow. I haven't seen any camera come out in the past 5 years with anything better than a 2 hour battery life. No external charger or battery pack, just the camera with a better battery.

Aaand one day after posting this, I've found one: Drift Ghost S.

Yea nope. Why do you think go pro is flopping? Because no one is going to pay ~$400 for a fookin action camera. Thus especially when their old one still works great. They overpriced the Session and that flopped. I don't care if this VIRB makes pancakes, the price-point is way off..

$40 chinese go pro knockoff works pretty well for me. SJCAM 5000 WiFi
