I know over time quite a number of people have posted asking for recommendations for an ink slinger. Now I'm doing the same. I know there are some fantastic tattooists here in the Bay Area, Ive seen their work on people and looked at their portfolios. Maybe its the Bay Area but there is a proliferation of hard edge cartoony work. I'm looking for someone who is painterly with an ability to make it dimensional. The artist that I'm using as a standard is Anil Gupta in NYC http://www.anilgupta.com/ He is just amazing! Can anyone here recommend a bay area artist that can even come close to his work? The design that I plan to work with is based on illuminated manuscripts with personal imagery mixed in. I know nthis type of work does not come cheap.........so does anyone want to buy a Ducati 906/907?

I'll be posting some examples of his work, but look at his website. It will take your breath away.

i like the one where the guy holds the heart in his hand.

the ones with the chain gogin in and out of the skin are nicley done too but not my style.

Chum - that's beautiful work.

To the OP - is it feasible for you to travel to NYC to get worked on by who you really want? If not, Chum's work is fantastic.

I'm hoping to get some fresh ink soon ... not as soon as I'd like but soon. :)

Wow... those pictuers makes me wanna get a tattoo too!

(with the amount of hair on my body, though, it will be pretty useless. :laughing)

Go schedule a trip to NYC and get Gupta to do your work. I know a woman who treks up to Victoria Island every year to get work added by her fave tattooist, and it's very worthwhile.
With your aesthetic sense, it's worth it. Mantegna's Martyrdom of St. Sebastian? Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase? What you gonna get?

There is one little problem in that he does not do cover ups at all, and I want an old one covered. The type of design that I want will cover it perfectly. It will be the curled patterns taken from Italian illuminated manuscripts, that way I can incorporate personal imagery within them.
One special thing will be a part of my fencing club's logo (an Italian foil and sabre ) also an image of my old cat, Odin, curled in a ball. That will be from a photo I took of him the day before he passed over.
Though I would like him to do a piece of either one of Van Gogh's irises or a Schiele influenced piece

Wow Talented folks out there. I would like a butterfly coming out of my skin in dimensional or a dragon perhaps. Nice work from all of the artists you guys posted here. :thumbup

One more vote for Klem! :hail

I don't have any work done by him personally, but a friend of mine had her whole back done by Klem, and it is really phenomenal work.

You can put it where there is not that much hair.:p

I've always been a fan of Paul Booth's work

Best example I can find:

The responses posted so far are very, very good, but neither artist seems to compare to the incredible artistry and delicate hand the OP showed us. Damn... I might have to make a trip to New York!
