Looking for a wireless router/cable modem for up to
or around $100 for my internet.
I still have my "2 wire" from at&t but that is DSL ($20 if anyone wants it).

Will be using the modem through Charter cable internet
and I want wireless for my Wii and a few other things.
It has been a while and I am a little outdated with what
the market has to offer so figured I'd turn to my trusted barf source.

Any recommendations?

Linksys WRT54GL, you can even put DD-WRT on it if you feel nerdy enough.

Won't Comcast be providing you with a cable modem? All you'd need to add to that is a wireless router. Check ratings and reviews on newegg.com... I like my Netgear WGR614L but that was from two years ago.

Well it is with charter (charter is like Reddings Comcast) Comcast only covers
up to Chico. Charter has a cable modem, but it is $5 a month as long as I have it
And I don't wanna do that.

So I am at Best Buy now looking for some of the ones that you guys said but they
Don't have them. Although they do have 1 that looks good - DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola surfboard extreme
Wireless cable modem gateway SBG6580

Best buy guy said that will handle what I want it for - youtube videos, surfing internet on
The Wii and some other basic stuff so I guess I will give it a go

I'd skip the Motorola if you can. Seems ALL of the problems I've had with speed limitations and dropped connections were related to it.

I switched to a RCA (DOCIS 3 standard) and everything is bitchin.

What is the model of the RCA?

I checked into ordering the d link 615 but I want a modem/router in 1
to save space/wires/money, otherwise I woulda gotten it.
I wanna get out payin this $5 a month for the modem charter is lettin me use.

Screw the save space bullshit. You'll only kick yourself in the ass if one of the parts dies. FWIW: I'm on my 4th cable modem, and second router.

My modem is a RCA DCM425 (and it's a tiny little thing aprx 3" wide by 2.5" high, and maybe 3.5" deep. IIRC, it's made by some other company for RCA. I want to say the company name is Thompson).

There is no RCA.

There is only Zuul.

RCA is the brand name of the day whored out to whomever has enough money.

Uhm yeah, I did state that my RCA modem was built by Thompson. :twofinger

I realize that, that was mostly for everyone else's benefit...if it's not exactly the same model, it could be made by someone else.

Basically, check very carefully with that brand... what's left of it, anyway. :cry

im a huge fan of buffalo routers...

way more ram then the WRT lines. dont know about the 615...

It's fine for one computer; put 75 more on it and a mail server, it'll crap out in 6 months.

My D-Link does about double to triple that amount in 6 months. :teeth Hasn't been reset, powercycled, etc since it was installed a year ago.

I'd say more like 6 hours.
