Anybody wear a modular helmet?

Some of those look pretty sweet. I like the drop-down sun lens.

The scorpion and the suomy are ECE-approved too, which makes me more confident of their safety.

the comfort of the shoeis, nolans, and schuberth are awesome, but they are pricey. the newer shoei synchrotec? (upgrade to multitec) has a built in visor and some nice features as well.

I did not like the liners/fit of the HJC or scorpion helmets, but the price is a lot cheaper.

I'm on my second Shoei Multitec and will be getting a Neotec soon. I've never seen or read of a first hand account of a modular opening in an accident.

How about this one, where SHARP found that the Shoei Multi only stayed shut 83% of the time?

The SHARP resources are the primary reason I bought Nolan modulars over Shoei. I wear a Qwest right now, but have I'd really like to get a Neotec or a Schuberth. I'm holding off 'til SHARP tests the Neo, and of course fit, are my two primary concerns. I switched from my Nolan N103 because it didn't fit me just right and would get uncomfortable after a few hours.

The quality of modular helmets can be dramatically different between vendors and models. A lot of them have very weak hinges, weak chin-bars, and little or no padding for the face.

Look for: Strong hinge pins. Strong locks. Multiple points securing the face-shield in the down position. EPS liner in front of the face. Strong chinbar.

Good brands: Nolan, Shoei. Bad brands: Most, but not all, of the others.

Shoei=good brand? In general, yes. For modulars, see above link where their $400 modular only stays closed 83% of the time. That's not a good brand in my book.

i hear yah!

i wear a different pair of glasses while riding. currently wearing something called "Swissflex"

http://opticaluniverse.com/store/images/products/84_06621.jpg

no metal frame, all plastic. great for riding, horrible for sailing (they'll fly right off!)

cant feel em, no metal either so purty comfy. if you get a chance check em out (or if you have a rec, i wouldnt mind hearing? always open to new ways to make glasses more comfy while riding).

I used to have big metal framed glasses and I could jam them into any helmet, but years ago I started wearing Sillouette TMA’s and they are the lightest and most comfortable glasses I have ever worn and the frames are made out of Titanium – but they are a bitch to get into a regular helmet – hence the modular helmet.

and the side impacts are bad! boooooooooooooo time for me to find another helmet.

The main reason I was even looking at the modular was that they have the sun visor, which is a feature I really like. The RPHA Max looked really promising but the head shape is more roundish, and that just aint gonna do for me. I have more of a "Shoei" head shape, so the Neotec would be a better choice.

But I can't think of a time where I would use the flip-up feature. I really just want the sun visor. I had one with the Scorpion EXO-1000 and I loved it. But that lid fell apart on me, so no more Scorpions for me. I imagine that like everything else, once you have a new functionality, you will invariably start using it. So the Neo and the Schuberth is still in play. I'm still favoring the C3 at this point.

I use a Schuberth C3. The convenience of this style helmet overrides all other considerations for me. :cool

Shark Evoline is really nice. Probably would have bought one instead of the Qwest if the chin bar would have closed wearing the one that fit my head.
:laughing
Modular helmets are more noisy, much more heavy. Safety is a mixed bag. Some are just as good as a FF, some are better than some FF, some are worse.
Shuberth C3 oh god that's a nice helmet and it fit my head really well but was waaaay out of my budget. If I give modular a try again it will probably be one of those.
Scorpion EXO-900 is a really nice one but it's fucking heavy. I had no idea how much a different a light helmet made in comfort until I bought my Qwest.
My first helmet bought for my head was an HJC IS-BT MAX and 2 of my housemates love them. They are decent helmets for the price. Lots of features, not as heavy as the EXO-900, okay ventilation, crappy aero (at least for me) and LOUD.
The 900 is much more quiet, a bit better ventilated, snell 2010 and ECE but noticeably heavier. Mind you both modulars I owned I mostly road on naked bikes with. YMVV w/ noise and aero based on your bike.

You may say "no right or wrong choice" now - but you'd change your tune if those seams on your convenient modular helmet didn't stand up to a frontal smash on the pavement...

Same argument can be made regarding the choice to ride vs. drive a car:

You may say "no right or wrong choice" [about riding a motorcycle] now - but you'd change your tune if your body doesn't stand up to a smash on the guardrail...

The incremental risk of choosing a flip-up vs. full face is far, far lower than the incremental risk of choosing a motorcycle vs. a car.

Convincing someone to wear a full-face helmet instead of a flip-up (or a beanie, or no helmet) is just as silly as trying to convince someone to drive a car instead of ride. We hate it when our friends/family do the latter, stop doing to same thing with the former.

Back OT: I wear a Shoei Neotec when touring, very convenient to talk/drink/snack at gas stations without taking off helmet. It's a bit louder than a regular full face, so I wear one of those often too.

I would really love a Shoei Neotec as my next helmet but since there's currently nothing wrong with my RF-1100 it's on the "want to have" and not "need to have" list.

What I've never understood is why moto officers don't/can't wear them.
I realize they have to interact with the public, hence the open face, but flipping that fucker down while in pursuit of some dirtbag seems like a reasonable option.

I've seen some of the Folsom PD motor officers wearing modular helmets, and those guys have plenty of interaction with the public. :laughing

I got a Bell Revolver, and I can't recommend it.

The fit is nowhere as good as my Bell Star, their high end helmet. The visor blew off when I had it tilted up but I was only going 30. And maybe this is a necessary feature, but it has a chin pad which when I have the faceplate up, blocks my vision.

I currently use an HJC SyMax (hi-viz) and like it except for two issues -

1) the liner comes unclipped from the clip-points when I take it off while holding the base of the helmet, so I've gone to putting my thumbs along-side my temples when taking off the helmet, and

2) it's noisier than the HJC IS-16 Scratch helmet I used to use (until my sister-in-law dropped it from 4' onto concrete). So I continue to use earplugs and I'm happy.

Copy that. I love my RF-1100. That is why I'm just going to save up so I can buy the Neo or the C3. It just seems like the others out there aren't going to cut it.

Oh, I have seen some LEOs starting to wear Modulars now. I'm not sure which brand, but they are sarting to wear them. 'Bout time, too. I think they will be safer with those lids.

I have the schuberth c3, best modular u can buy

Someone posted this on advrider.com awhile back.

Ouch. This is what makes me hesitate about modulars. And obviously the chin bar didn't fly open, that just got snapped right off. As you can tell, I'm still on the fence about this and that image will weigh on the final decision.

What? No it isn't.

Do you feel the same way about leather pants vs. jeans? how bout shorts? with flip-flops, of course... cuz shin-high boots are just silly.
