Anyone else notice a change in Harley Attire???

This isn't really anything THAT new, but I saw like 3 examples of it on my way to work today so I thought I'd mention it. More and more Harley and Cruiser riders are wearing full leathers/textiles and full faced helmets. Not just that but I saw one guy on a harley with Blue leathers (to match his bike) gloves leather pants and boots. I wish I had been in the position to take a picture because it looked as though he crashed his gixxer took it in to get fixed and they gave him a harley as loaner. 5-6 years ago you would never see anyone a cruiser who broke the dress code of a "tippy-top" helmet (thats what I call em...), leather vest, black gloves with finger holes, jeans, and black cowboy boots. Too see them in full faced helmets or anything else that strays from this dress code is really beginning to get silly. It's like the Harley "Rebel" moto is losing its edge. I just think if you're that damn concerned about getting hurt then maybe you should get a honda civic...

I think a majority of the Harleys we see now days are not "true" bad ass Harley riders, but weekend "Wild Hog" types. I think even most that do the group rides on 9 have'm to play with on the weekends.

It's great to see gear on all riders, the more the better!!!

I just watched that movie 15 minutes ago. There was a few funny bits, but Torme going for Macy nah. ATGATT even for the wannabees.
 
Harley likes making money. What costs more; more gear or less? Maybe it's a marketing strategy.
 
That's just it, their weekend RUB's who have probably seen one too many of their own go down and seeing what happens if you don't wear gear. The old diehards of yesteryear are a dying breed.
 
I've noticed a few more cruiser riders in full leathers and full face helmets myself. I've always had a full face helmet and a 2 piece riding suit. Lets hope this trend towards wearing more protective gear continues.

people on harleys don't ride them as fast and reckless as people on sport bikes.
the guy in the top picture on his slow relaxed cruiser is mainly risking a broken clavical and a knee injury. he is wearing a helmet and head injuriers generally occur from impact to the upper sides or back of the head. he could be wearing more gear, but his body, even his hands are at least covered. he is at least wearing better gear than joe squid in his t-shirt, 800 replica helmet, and tennis shoes.
the 'after' picture, there is just something not right about that. all we need is guys on harley touring set ups trying to ride them like sport bikes.

Disco and gays took an existing trend to a left turn at Albuquerque and turned it into something different.

The "novelty" helmet like he's wearing will actually cause more head injuries than it prevents due to the edge of the helmet being located right at the impact points mentioned above.
It forces the edge to cut into the skull on impact.

This trend towards full face helmets and better pants and jackets probably started in colder climates, where anyone who wants to ride all year has no choice but to wear gear that also offers weather protection. I've always seen a lot more Harley riders in Oregon and Washington wearing full face helmets than in California. Especially in winter.
 
You guys are definitly missing the point. A harley rider in a full leather alpinestar gettup looks like a yutz. Half of em talk shit on sportbike riders and don't wanna wave and shit and now they wanna bite our gear. Most Harley go 0-6 in 5 seconds or more so you're really not in a whole bunch of danger. Riding a harley with all that gear is like a nerd tryna swim with big boys wearing goggles, swim cap, a floatie on each arm, and an innertube around his waste. Someone make a bulle caption on this pic saying..."I lost my gixxer!"

Bike sales are slow, what better way to pry money from the flock than to market gear that they should have bought financed with the bike?

In this market all the people who took money out of their house to buy Harleys are now in foreclosure so you are seeing real riders out on the streets and the RUBs (or PUBs now that they are poor) no longer are riding.

Har har har...Especially since I don't own that bike any more. To be honest I did wear gear when I had a GS500, but only because I was a noob and I didnt own a leather then. Either way to compare a GS500F to Harley in terms of "badassness" is a bit of stretch. :rolleyes
 
This is sad. You folks really don't know squat about folks that ride Harleys and yet they're a huge cross section of motorcyclists.

A simple leather jacket and chaps actually do a great job of protection as does a decent (non-beanie) half-helmet. Sure, armor and a full face helps, but it's not like you're guaranteed burger if you don't wear it. There is concern with full faces causing head injuries that a half helmet wouldn't and a wider field of vision with a half helmet (I've tested this personally). Plus reduced mobility with armor. So we're really splitting hairs here. It's a matter of preference. GEAR > NO GEAR

As to the stereotype that a Harley rider can't ride, we've all seen plenty of people on sport bikes that can't, either.

With all the crap from cagers, shit coming down from the EPA (you'll be having to get your bikes smogged soon) and stuff, you'd think bikers would try to stick together. Strength in numbers and all. But all they want to do is split themselves apart.

The anti-bikers aren't going to have to do shit to get rid of us. We're gonna do it to ourselves through our own petty bullshit.

And to be fair, it's not just sportbikers that drive a wedge in between bikers. A lot of Harley riders do the same thing, too.

But it's got to stop somewhere. If each of us makes a concerted effort to be a friend to EVERY biker, perhaps, over time, we can reverse this sad trend among our brothers and remember that, at the core, we all just like to ride.
