Anyone going to Sturgis on a sports bike next month?

I'd be willing to bet you won't find a single person in these two countries yelling "Freedums. Ain't wearing no mask."

Pretty safe bet considering neither countries are English speaking. :)

It couldn’t be those countries active lifestyles and low levels of obesity could it.... nahhh

$12 billion, yeah party on....

According to a new study, which tracked anonymized cellphone data from the rally, over 250,000 coronavirus cases have now been tied to the 10-day event, one of the largest to be held since the start of the pandemic. It drew motorcycle enthusiasts from around the country, many of whom were seen without face coverings inside crowded bars, restaurants, and other indoor establishments.

The explosion in cases, the study from the Germany-based IZA Institute of Labor Economics finds, is expected to reach $12 billion in public health costs.

Good! Sounds like they’ll build up herd immunity quickly then. I got my info from the CDC, I’m sorry you don’t like them. Yes, I tend to mock the weak and easily scared. Healthy people don’t need to fear the China flu. Perhaps one day Americans will admit their health and obesity crisis but for now it seems we will continue to watch them misplace responsibility. As for me, I’ll be partying
Your older relatives must have already died off, and you probably have no concern of others.

You should be on zoom attending class, or did you stop your video?

Maybe what we need is poll on this thread, asking people whether they believe in:
  1. wearing masks, staying locked down, waiting for a vaccine, being considerate when hanging around with others, staying away from mass gatherings. This sh*t's real, so you gotta respect it.
  2. right to choose, work if you want/need, no vaccine necessary, go to Sturgis or anywhere else I want, party on. It's all a hoax anyways - just a bit of flu.

And then we could submit the results to the CDC and Europe and Russia, and get everyone to agree on it; and then the virus will go away.

Some people don’t seem to understand that the 400K attendees aren’t the only ones at risk: so is everyone with whom they’ve been in contact, along with the people who have been in contact with THOSE people, and so on.

Epidemiology 101.

Hey, can we start calling it the “Sturgis virus” from now on?

What you don't seem to get is that it isn't a binary choice.

The people wearing masks are doing so in order to get back to normal.
The morons refusing to wear masks are the ones creating the very situation that they are decrying. A total breakdown in critical thinking skills.

Start a new thread with a poll. I started to do it a few days ago and time closed in on me. : |

I think it would be interesting to take a pulse here as we see many on each side of the fence.

You do know what "binary choice" means, right? Just checking...:laughing

Too bad it's not that simple. Here you are conflating, as many have done, the search for basic information and knowledge with a lock down.

IDK. I'm 45. The men in my family tend to live into their mid-90's.

I figure its is very likely in the next 50 years, I'll catch COVID in some form or another.

This new paper says that Sturgis spread COVID-19 to such an extent that the medical costs were $12.2 billion.

That is a perspective analyis.. educated guess.

It will take months to actually track the cases. Problem is that people see that stuff and go bezerk.

I know because several have texted me already saying can you believe these idiots there are 250K cases. My response is not yet.. read beyound the headline for the real application of the study.

Please guys... we don't need to poke at each other.

:deadhorse

My final word on this topic is: Masks are ATGATT for when we’re not riding.

Given the times.. yes. :rofl

I do find this subject super interesting. A true test for society to use in the future.

Well, the conclusion in the paper is for the specific time period prior to September 2. Nobody will ever trace a quarter million cases back to Sturgis because this analysis is based on disproportionate increase in case load in the counties from which many people traveled to the rally.

Science Fiction

Study connecting 250,000 COVID-19 cases to Sturgis Rally 'isn't science, it's fiction'

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s administration announced Tuesday that it is using federal coronavirus relief funds to pay for a $5 million tourism ad campaign aimed at drawing people to the state, even as it emerges as one of the nation’s top hot spots for COVID-19 infections.
