ANYone use open faced helmets anymore?

There should be opened faced condoms, like cut open at the end. Hey, they protect!

Been wearing the 3/4 at work and just got a brand new Multitec fullface. Can''t wait to try it out.

Always a fullface on my personal bikes.

Ahhh... claustrophobia. I understand. I can't stand sleeping bags. Elevators and full-face helmets I'm OK with but sleeping bags freak me out.
That is how I got my flip-up. A woman my wife knows is claustrophobic and decided to try the flip-up to see if she would be okay with the chin bar down on occasion; it didn't work. She wore it once, freaked out, and gave it away to my wife.

Are American LEO's going with flip-ups finally? Or is this perhaps just your personal lid or trial thing?

Saw a guy with a .75 pulled a HUGE wheelie on his KTM the other day. Also a .5 facer riding a Duc SS, stopping for red, pulled out cell phone and talked. Of course, he entertained the pack holded up behind by sporting a litlle 3-and-a-half inches wheelie when take off 10 sec after the light turn green.

I knocked all my teeth out--both rows--wearing an open face helmet. I only wore it once. Never again. I've also had several other incidents where a full-face saved my teeth and jaw, so it was no freak occurrence.

I will never wear anything but full-face. You might catch me skimping elsewhere for one reason or another, on very rare occasion, but not on this point. After all, I have to wear a helmet anyway. SO full face it is.

That's why you wear a full face

These are the most important elements of surviving as a motorcylist:
(In order of importance)

Judgement
Observational skills
Operational skills
Gear

The gear protects you when all of the above have failed you. That doesn't mean work on the rest and not bother with gear. That would be just as stupid as thinking you can buy all the best gear and ride like a fool and survive. You will, but not for long.

What it does tell you is what's most important and the priority you should place on improving those elements.

That makes sense :)
I figure judgment goes with the observational skills. Otherwise, you're making decisions based on nothin'.

On a semi-related note, saw a guy riding this weekend, with an openfaced helmet...with the shin strap completely unfastened, flapping around.

I think he wins the Stupid prize.

While all of this is nice and educational for riders who have ridden for a little bit, when you're a new rider, the first 3 are basically non-existant, leaving you with pretty much gear on it's own. All the reading, conversing, and non-motorcycle practicing you do amounts to very little overall. This is why people get so :rant about gear, is because for a lot of new riders, it's all you've got between you and that pavement that's so thirsty for your blood. A new rider can work their ass off improving the first 3 and still be immediately thrust into a situation that demands more than they have to cope with, and that's why gear is so important.

As you state, it's effectiveness on a daily ride basis is much lower than the effectiveness of any of the other things you list, but for new riders, the importance of gear cannot be overstated. Well, maybe it can....:laughing

When I spank it, I always wear a full-face for protection. :x

With the recent purchase of my Ducati Sport, I sported my KBC Open-Face helmet for about a week, until:

A) I got tired of feeling nervous about the way my face would look (of what was left of it) should I get into an accident.

B) Even with goggles, I still felt like I was playing roulette with my face.

C) My buddy recently got into an accident and hit hard into a corner, helmet slamming into a curb. He walked away, and he swore without that helmet, he'd be Carne Asada Con Sangre. No Thx.

Just be safe, and realize that you're running a major risk with an Open-Face. Or else you'd truly be suffering for beauty...

When I went down I realized that if I'd been wearing open-face my chin would have been pretty mashed up. I never really considered getting an open-face helmet before that, but I definitely wouldn't now.

Open face helmets are only interesting to the extent that you would like to grind your face off.

:rofl

Just hope your ass is hairy when they stitch a chunk of it to your chin so you can still grow a beard.

Full face only please. I've hit enough bugs/rocks/UFO's off the shield to easily make me happy.

Besides: it's quieter, comfier and far more aerodynamic!

:wow I'll keep the full face.
