My grandsons iPhone 16 Pro was stolen. For almost a year I've been paying for Apple Care Theft and Loss insurance. There is little difficulty with various softwares to hack into an iPhone and change the password and turn off Find My. This seems to have been done as any seasoned thief would do. Being that I have no idea of the new PW the insurance claim will not be honored! Now I have to pay off the remaining $900 on the phone and eat the months of insurance fees. Over 3 hours on the phone with several Apple agents that can do nothing about it. I have the phone serial number and account number and expected that Apple could shut it down and honor the claim, not no can do???
I'm not surprised that they have a system that provides a path to a new phone purchase if yours is stolen by scum with 1/2 a brain and a few bucks for software to hack with.

Fumming....

So just because you don’t know the new password Apple won’t pay?
That’s ridiculous. They are a multi billion dollar company and you faithfully paid the insurance premium for protection against this very occurrence.
I don’t get it.

My g/f's iPhone fell off our boat a few months ago. Yeah, she fucked up and didn't recall her password.
Apple pretty much held her hostage for over two weeks.
That shit could've been fixed within minutes from any computer if it was android.
Fuck Apple
Sorry, Apple people.

Maybe the lesson here is instead of paying the monthly insurance premium put that money into an account to purchase a new phone.

The thief is probably a friend or something that knows the device pin. I’m pretty sure you can’t change the Apple ID password or turn off FindMy without the pin. Getting the pin from “hacking an iPhone” seems very very unlikely, cuz that’s not how passwords work. The device does not store “123456” ever. So it’s more likely someone knew the pin.

Disabling FindMy is the sure fire way to get a claim denied. Lost Mode or remote wipe was probably the way around this. But all bets are off if someone knew the pin.

possibly if you have phone’s purchase receipt to your name, and there is a way to trace that to the serial number you may be in luck. Otherwise it’s your word versus another person.. now give me my phone back!! (i kid i kid), this sucks, but managing your online account and what’s important to you is your personal responsibility, not manufacturers

I sympathize . A brand new iPad Air was consumed in a fire. Apple Care plus will not cover it because it was never turned on :mad

If you know, you know. :nerd

I have never considered paying appleCare for any apple product, it's a rip-off!

The Apple CEO is an idiot, Steve Jobs wasn't a nice guy, but he was a genius with maintaining customers, this new guy has always been an idiot with his policy decisions.

I don't know why anyone would buy a $1200 phone in the first place, let alone finance it, let alone insure it, let alone do any of that for a 15yo. We bought a Samsung A16 for $199 at Best Buy as a backup phone for the household and it's a pretty decent phone, certainly more than the average user needs.

You would think they’re cheap as dirt the way people are so careless with their phones.
Mine doesn’t leave my pocket if I’m out in public, unless I have to make a call.
AppleCare or not I kinda expect I’m eating the cost if it’s lost or stolen.

The thing is if kids go into middle school without a phone they are seen as less than by their peers.
Granted they don’t need the latest and greatest but even prior models are expensive.

You make kids targets with a $1200 phone, because it means that anyone can take it and someone will just get them a new one. Buy the $199 phone, put a cracked screen protector on it and enjoy the lack of spotlight that comes with that. Loud pipes don't actually save lives.

Never understood paying so much money for a phone...

I have a TCL phone that runs Android OS. The phone was $60 and monthly service is $40. Does everything I need it to do.

I don't understand new phone craze.

Because most people actually get the carrier to subsidize the phone, cutting its price by at least two-thirds. Not a bad deal if you knew you were going to stay with that carrier a long time anyway.

Carriers don't subsidize phones anymore.

People agree to make $40 monthly payments for 2 years or whatever.

Financing something like a phone is a horrible idea. Full stop.

A few months ago I finished paying mine off. 36 payments at only $11 each, = $396 for an iPhone 13 pro. Not a bad deal if you ask me, since I already intended to stay with Verizon that whole time anyway.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that deal required trading in my old iPhone XS, but it was only worth about $200 on the open market anyway

ATT still subsidizes for 2 year commitments on my corporate deal.

Jeff, are you sure your grandson didn't turn off the "find my" to stop location sharing?
