Apple comes up with thinnest laptop ever

I wonder if they made it sufficiently strong that it will resist breaking when the average user picks it up by a corner of the screen and carries it around the office floor.

From Yahoo Tech:
.. By the way, as great as the MacBook Air sounds, calling this the "world's thinnest notebook" is hyperbole: The Sony X505 was 0.75" thick... and it was released in 2003...

The good news for me are on the iPhone side - Software upgrades = no need to buy new phone! :)

iPhone Software Upgrades

Apple isn't resting on its cell phone laurels; after selling 4 million iPhones, it's adding new features to the existing software package (including webclips, which will bookmark not just a web page but a specific zoom and pan and then let you place them on your home screen; multiple recipient SMS; and lyrics support for iTunes). Nothing major, but some nice, incremental upgrades to the existing software. iPod Touch gets the same upgrades as the iPhone, but it will cost you $20.

i read a article about the possibility of having the imacs have a docking station for the new thin macbooks. ie: you slide the mac into the side of the imac and you have a everything you need on the imac :)

... i like the macbook i have right now though, thnx!

A friend works for Apple. To demonstrate the toughness of their laptops they went to the top floor of one of the Apple campus buildings. They took the laptop, tossed it over the side of the building (7 stories). Walked down and the F'n thing booted right up. He said even he was amazed.

I have had my G4 powerbook for over 4 years. I have carried it inappropriately and even dropped it. It's never seen hardware or software service.

I'm sure it will hold up fine.

The Time Capsule looks like it's worth it, as it's a combined backup storage drive (up to 1 TB) and a base station.

As to the MacBook Air, I wonder what kind of heat it generates. And I'd like to know why Apple decided on a LED-backed monitor instead of the LCD. And the reasons behind the omission of FireWire ports.

no firewire... boo hiss.

well, I wonder if the battery will last any longer than the half hour I get on my mac book. Bet it won't .

Wait six months, they will release another laptop for the same price with most of the problems corrected, and the old ones will sell for $1200. Or wait a year and they will be obsoleted out and sell for $1k.

reported battery life is 5 hours.

Cons:
no firewire
no ethernet
1 usb only
battery is not replaceable by user . you have to mail it in to get apple to replace it. cost is $129
memory and hard drive are not upgragable.
no superdrive
Hard drive is 80 gb pata, not sata. 4200 rpm.

Not impressed. Classic Apple wrap a pile of shit in a pretty package and sell it at an outrageous price to the fanboys modus operandi. The thing is basically a giant iPod, which is also a bunch of shitty hardware wrapped in amazing design.

yah that is reported battery life running the OS in sleep mode, I suspect. I have never owned a laptop with a five hour working life.

Mail in to replace battery. No upgrades.

Guess what. This is an apple TOY they are building on the cheap to see if enough kids will buy one ( read "idiots")

^ i actually get up to just under 5 hours on the battery of the macbook pro with it being in constant use...

wonder what the real world battery life its on it.... one movie.. tops... for the most part.. my macbook pro is already thin enough.. less than an inch.. any thiner i would worry about breaking it in half... what would be nice if they could make it just smaller, paperback book size, with a folding tiled screen of some sort.

Is this 2001 all over again?

I don't know if this "subnotebook" product will catch on or not, probably not. But that kind of stuff is what people said when the iPod came out. The "kids" buying this new subnotebook will be thirty-something and fourty-something "kids".

Dell did the same stunt last year I think, but nobody bought it because it's just plain pointless.

On another note, my gf sneezed on her macbook and had to buy a new one because the mobo was fried ($900 bux mobo :rofl)

YES!!!!!

I can't wait to get a laptop that I can't watch a DVD on when I'm at the airport!

Apple love I see :laughing

I had an iPod, it froze all the time and the battery died super fast, I got an iPod nano, same thing, I got a shuffle, same thing so I decided to be smart and got... the iPhone!! doh... :p

Pretty neat and I'm sure PC laptop builders will follow in Apples footsteps.

Biggest factors that make this smaller and lighter
  • No optical drive
  • LED screen backlighting
  • Minimal external ports

I'm wondering about battery size/life/replacability

Somebody please explain to me the benefit of not having an optical drive?

This is a really fucking big smartphone, only it can't make phone calls. BFD.
