Are all cars more boring to drive than bikes are to ride?

No.

On the road, yes. A car can be pushed, safely (for you and others), much closer to its limits on the road. And if it's old enough that can even be done at legal speeds. On the moto, I'd never ride close to that hard on anything but a track.

But, since I've never driven a super high horse powered car, I don't know how if the thrill of acceleration is the same as the moto.
It's different and in my opinion, straight line acceleration in a fast car is more fun. Nothing beats G forces pressing you into a bucket seat, the tires chirping, the symphony of the intake, turbo, and exhaust playing together, and being thrown forward into the belt harness with each shift. :thumbup

My MR2 Spyder is called a 4-wheel motorcycle, and is the funnest car ever. I bought it new in 2000 and it still makes you grin when you drive it. :teeth

It's fast because it is really light @ 2150 lbs. :later

You have to have a manual transmission. You can not have fun driving an automatic slush box. :x

Most important, you need to have a convertible. You can't appreciate a fast sporty car unless you are out in the open. :thumbup

when it's cold then yes...my old 240sx on coilovers was a hell of a lot of fun when I had it

Congratulations on not being able to read.

So you write up some blah blah story about taking your RAV4 out for a loop and being bored. Ending with this....

Riding is of course much more fun. I do wonder though, since I don't have something zippy like a two seater Miata or Z car or whatever, are there any cars that compete with a bike in terms of fun? Any car over $100k doesn't count because I'm not going to buy something like that :p

You know damn well there's a shit ton of choices for less than $100k that are far more fun to drive. You even name two specifically. Not sure what exactly you're expecting from a RAV4, yet you used it as the basis of your car to bike comparison. I've driven plenty of those, and I believe that even a Goldwing trike towing a trailer with a nagging wife riding bitch would still be more fun than trying to run that Toyota through the twisties.

I dunno...maybe I shoulda gone to teh college and got me some of their book learnin' they offer. But what I comprehended from your post was that you doubt any car would measure up to how much fun a bike is to ride. Perhaps if you left the part about driving a boring ass Toyota SUV around out of your question of "is there a car out there that's more fun than a bike," my dumb ass might have gotten the point more clearly.

But to go ahead and waste more keystrokes, yeah there's plenty of shit out there with four wheels that's every bit as fun if not more than riding a bike. I haven't exacty rushed out to buy a new bike in the past couple years because I have a car that's more useful and just as much fun as any bike I've ever had or ridden.

The important part of the OP is emphasized for people who have difficulty reading sentences longer than "Run Jane, run."

And don't bother answering the question, I'm not interested in your opinion.

Excellent point. Unless you're a complete fucking lunatic just begging for a bone breaking highside eventually, you would probably not want to powerslide around a turn on the street. In a car, yeah it's dangerous, but far more manageable. And with some cars, the computer will never let you totally "lose it" either. If I do a drift in my car with the stability control set to the competition mode, it'll allow the back end to hang out plenty enough to give me a shot eating grin, but never over rotate. Even if I just foolishly floorboard the accelerator pedal through the whole turn.

Oh, and to every genius that is ranting about how the RAV4 isn't a sports car:

Congrats, nothing gets past you!

I drove it today because it's the car I have. The whole purpose of the thread is to discuss other cars. So shut up with the SUV bashing. I bought it to tow trailers not to set lap times.

:facepalm

Bro, why the hell did you buy a Rav4 to go play in the hills? That's what I call stupid. :laughing:p

As I said....

I'm not going to bother answering your question and giving you a whole list of cars that are great fun. They'd be wasted on you anyways. As far as I'm concerned, you turned in whatever car enthusiast man card you may ever have had the instant you got handed the keys to a RAV4. Might as well have started a story with "so I took the Toyota Sienna out for a pleasure cruise today" or maybe even a Prius.

I drove it today because it's the car I have.

Just because it's the car i have, I wouldn't take my Corvette down to Home Depot to pick up a jackhammer, even though I could probably fit it in there. I'd have gone to Hertz and rented a F-150. Just like you could have gone to Hertz and rented a Corvette or a Mustang to take a spirited drive on 84, 9, Mines, or whatever your street track of choice was.

Use the right tool for job or don't complain when the job turns out like shit.

The most boring bike made is more fun than the most exciting car. Period. If you do not believe that truism then you're not a biker at your core.

Don't be absurd. So you'd rather take the aforementioned Goldwing trike out for a hot lap than say, a Ferrari 599 GTO?

You can still be a biker and actually appreciate "cages" too. That whole "you're only free when you're on a bike" mentality with the wind in your hair or whatever mentality is bullshit. Last time I checked, my M1 license has me following the exact same speed limits, stop signs, and so on that my class C does. So where's the freedom? Oh I don't get it...and I never will because I'm not a true biker. Just some "cager" who rides because it's the cool thing to do. Interestingly enough, I was riding bikes on the street years before I ever learned to drive a car.

I've had and ridden lots of bikes, from Hayabusa to Harley. CBX to CBR1100XX. With lots in-between. And I've driven plenty of cars in my life and career. Many are boring. But the ones that are made for fun certainly are a lot of fun. Just as much if not more than any of the bikes.

Of course that's all my opinion. I know the dyed in the wool purist bikers don't think any car is worth a damn...but I wonder how many of them have truly had the chance to play with a proper car? Just about any middle class kid outta high school can get into a GSXR600 or whatever and have a blast with it. And that may be the most fun they ever have operating a vehicle. How many of those same people get to rail a $100k supercharged NSX up highway 17 and back? Or get to bang through the gears of a Ferrari/Maserati with the F1 paddle shifters with the V8 wailing louder than you'd think a street legal car should be? Listen to the thrum of a Lamborghini V10 while sitting in sublime comfort while driving an Audi S8? Zipping a Mini Cooper through the cones of an autocross course? I've got plenty of examples of really fun moments I've had in cars. Many of them due to my profession and some due to the fact that I afford some fun cars of my own.

So what exactly makes one think that no car can match how fun a bike is? Does that come from just not having any kind of experiences like I've had in cars? Or is it just that whole trapped in a "cage" thing that bikers like to say?

when its cold as shit like it has been these past few months, i have A LOT more fun in my car. it is comfy, handles great, and its fun to slide around in the wet. for me, the fun in a car is mostly the handling; as riding literbikes for years has made it very hard for a car to impress me with its acceleration. as with riding, the fun lies in the challenge of playing with the cornering limits, not with flogging the throttle

<------------- cost me $9k + tax + 6k in mods so far. sure dont need $100k to have a fun, 'fast enough' car

its got a corolla-type engine, so only makes 140hp-ish, but weighs 2200lbs, so does the 1/4 mile in around 15 seconds. i'd say i am faster in the corners in it, than when I am on my bike - which is way fun

however in good weather, bike wins hands down. you dont get stuck behind slow ass drivers and you got infinitely more power, and can actually lean the thing w/o fearing of slipping on some stupid thing and wrecking your ride

I was at a car/bike trackday.

Got a ride-along in a miata. Felt underpowered, kind of like a ninja 250.

Rode in a spec-miata with a experienced (race) driver. Seemed like a ninja 250 ridden by an experienced racer.. all gas and no brakes :laughing

Rode in an R8. Thing was comfortable as hell. The brakes are mind-blowing, as he'd wait till about a quarter to half second before turns to initiate braking. The acceleration was so-so. I was expecting more :dunno

Got a ride in an Elise, and that thing is like a Miata on crack. Zippy as hell, and the closest to a moto's acceleration that I've experienced so far.

There was an Atom which would probably be like a moto with regards to acceleration, but it was near-impossible to get a ride in it, I tried multiple times :|

So to answer your question, if you like both acceleration and handling and want to keep it under 6 figures, (from my limited experienced as a passenger) I'd wager that Lotus would be a good venture. :thumbup

Yeah the Elise is more of go kart for the street than even a John Cooper Works Mini Cooper. Never driven an Atom, but I imagine it's even more so than the Lotus....which it should be since it's even less practical than the Lotus.

I'm not a biker to the core then....

8 years racing and instructing will do that to you. I have alot of fun in different cars driven hard and well. There's nothing like throwing 4000lbs into a bend and having the tires not chirp, but full stability control engage when it shifts into 2nd and loses complete traction at the rear. Nothing gets me giggling like that...no bike ever has.

Of course I may be the exception. Riding, when I do it, is now more like a job and the driving fast is way for fun. Nothing beats 560hp at the rear wheels...

As Rob said, a Rav4 is a shitty reference point. It's like thinking a Vino 125 is a motorcycle. Try a Vette on the track and see what fun is...stupid fun, with Celine Dion playing on the radio...
