are Dyson vacuum's worth the money

it depends on how much blood you spilled during your last murder.

seriously, though, i don't see how they could be compared to a $50 shop vac.

No.

We have the purple "Animal" model because we believed the marketing hype and thought with two cats and a dog we were making a good move. It can take a couple passes to clean up a spot and I think it lets a lot of dust back into the room.

I give it a B-/ C+

No. They are quite quiet for a vacuum cleaner.

+1 on Shop Vac. Do the Dysons even pick up liquids?

I had a dyson i was really impressed with until someone used it to vacum up the ashes in my fireplace, after that it sucked (no pun intended) they can be rebuilt to work exactly like when they were new but the plastic body chips and breaks really easy and they start looking like shit. if you want to spend money on a vacum get an oreck, best vacum ever in my opion or a shop vac.:thumbup

No. Instead what happens is that the water turns the dust and junk into globs that stick to the internal filter and gums up the works. :|

My wife is not impressed with my sawdust covered shop vac while I am throughly unimpressed with the dyson. I'd say we're even but, um, not quite.

Miele makes the best home vacs you can get. I have one that must be 12 years old and it still kicks ass. You will pay hundreds for one, and it will last forever.

I hear good things about Dyson from folks who use it normally. Pet owners on the other hand seem to expect miracles from their Dyson (pulling out pet hair that's been mashed into the carpet) and are thus dissatisfied. We have an el-cheapo vacuum cleaner for regular duty and a steam cleaner and life's been grand. :)

We just replaced an Oreck with a Dyson; the Dyson wins hands down. I hear the point about a shop vac, but they don't work so well on carpet. Also, FWIW, the house doesn't smell like a vacuum has been running after using the Dyson.
