are public storage facilities pretty safe to store motorcycles

Had a couple quads stolen in sonoma at a storage place with storage spaces secured by cyclone fence and tarps hung up to keep out prying eyes. Have used a more secure garage style one for years and hadn't had an issue. Then bought my own place and keep stuff with me.

Nope.

Have had many people I know get storage units broken into and I've heard more than a few folks around here have the same.

Insure your storage and don't store anything you can part with.

I had a buddy who stored his motorcycle, expensive road bicycle, and all of his tools at a storage facility in Mountain View for a couple of years. He never had any problems.

How many items are you storing? Id expect monthly to be about $80.

Not sure on rules..whether you can put vehicles in normal storage units or if you need to let them know/pay even more for parking in a designated storage (would insurance pay out if it is not 'stored according to policy'?).

The last time I had a storage unit with a vehicle in it, they needed a copy of the registration.

Before renting the unit, you might ask them how often their units get broken into and what they do about it.

I stored two race bikes in a storage unit down by Oakland coliseum for about four months. I had to prove I owned the bikes. No problems.

I've got a Public Storage unit that I use to rotate my bikes in and out of when the GF bitches about the garage being full. I feel secure about it so far because I have a 4th floor climate controlled indoor unit.

A guy I work with has a kid that had his storage unit broken into and a lot of stuff stolen (nothing MC related). The people cut in through the sides of several units and took whatever they wanted.

Post up on BARF, see if someone will store your bike for $ per month in their garage...

Back when I had space in my garage I totally would have considered doing that for someone that was local. It's just a pain in the ass if they want to get their bike and you're not available. Also not sure how insurance would handle that if something were to happen.

I store 2 bikes and my humongous rollaway tool box in a storage unit. I'm way in the back which is good I think. And probably the fact that you have to be the god damn Hulk to get the door up helps keep things safe.

Stored 2 bikes at a public storage for a number of months. It was fine. The people who ran it, lived on the property. Seemed pretty serious about who went in and put. No double cars per code and such. YMMV

If I did it, I would look to install some sort of wireless motion detector that alerts me when the door opens.

Used one for couple months when the theft attempts where I was living were getting out of control...I didn't have any issues, but technically "vehicles" weren't allowed in an enclosed unit. Guessing if the race bike had spontaneously combusted I would have been in trouble :laughing

Uhaul storage had that policy when I inquired, but Public Storage did not. The only thing PS cared about was that I be the registered vehicle owner. They also don't want me starting the bike inside the building.

I've stored bikes in storage units in other high crime but not bay area locations.

1. Security. If the bike is indoors in an enclosed space and you use the circle style locks that can only be drilled out or opened with a grinder than it's pretty secure. The staff is "in on" any break ins with that scenario IMO. I had to break into my own unit once after a key mishap and the staff knew ahead of time, but if they didn't they would've heard me drilling instantly and called the police. Granted I'm not a pro but it took me at least 10 minutes with a loud plug in power drill, oil, and obviously long extension cord to get through 1 lock.

2. 2nd floor option works but the biggest thing to get is something near the elevator. I stored a Speed Triple with a super short wheel base for a few winters and had difficulty maneuvering it around the right angles most storage units have for hallways. It was basically a 2 person lift job.
