So, I was lame enough to log onto myspace even though I told myself I wouldn't. Within 3 minutes, my laptop is locked up and my antivirus have discovered 2 new viruses that it sends to quarantine. Unfortunatly, now I get pop-ups every few minutes. They are quite irritatting especially when I am trying to type something and get interrupted.
How can I get rid of these?

TIA

haha, guess I should have known. Firefox and the addons are very easy to install. download firefox from mozilla.org when it installs, it will even import your IE bookmarks

once it is installed from the tools menu select add-ons that will bring you to the addons page for firefox. from there you can look up adblock and install it.

buzz me if you run into any problems

firefox also has a pretty good pop-up blocker built in

Ok, I have firefox installed, and am still getting the pop ups. Now how do I get rid of those? Do I have to uninstall IE?

firefox will help to prevent the pop-ups in the future, not fix the damage that has already been done.

what operating system are you using? Do you currently use any anti-spyware / anti-malware program?

I have XP. I did located the cause of the annoying pop ups. A program had been added to my OS. I uninstalled it and all seems good from that perspective. The one thing that really concerns me is that my antivirus, which usually finds the viruses and quarantines them successfully, found one last night that it could not quarantine, and couldn't clean. Not good Im thinking....

I don't have much installed on this laptop since it used to be used primarily for watching dvds and logging into flights when traveling. Unfortunately, since I canceled my DSL and switched to cable with a wireless router, my PC does not have a wireless card and I am stuck using this until I can get that issue solved. :(

the wireless router might also have wired ports, I would be surprised if it didn't.

The antivirus companies are often playing a game of catch-up controlling virus' (virii?, heh) Likely the next virus definitions file will catch that virus. You are keeping your AV updated I hope

The router does, but I just redecorated and I don't want to have cables running from the living room to the bedroom. No bueno on running them under the carpet either, since that's how my phone line has crapped out and I lost my DSL.

Yeah, I update it every so often.....

Here are the steps, since I read that you already have an antivirus installed I am not recommending going for a different one. Do make sure your definitions are up to date on it.

Download ad aware software from below. It is free and the best out there in market:
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-20...045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

Once done run it and see if the issue is resolved.

If not then you might like to run a diff. virus scanner. You can do so by going to below link: (again a free service)
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

This should most likely help you.

If not (ugh .. not looking good), try installing a new virus scanner. AVG is pretty decent and free.
http://free.grisoft.com/

Try running this, if all fails guess time to format ;)

Hope this helps !!

Yeah, can see the no wires desire. Installing a wireless card in a desktop is a simple process. Let me know if you want a hand.

:thumbup I have done the trend micro scan before. Haven't done so in a long time (not on this laptop anyways) Thanks for the reminder! Good call on the adaware site. Need to download that to this machine. Thanks!!

Cool deal! I will let you know. Funds are limited right now, and putting the desktop wireless isn't a priority, but I will keep you in mind when I get to that step. :thumbup :)

sounds good, let me know the model of your wireless router, and I'll do some preliminary checking on options.

Ok, I have a question. I am using firefox now, but I keep getting the spam pop up ads, and they are coming on internet explorer windows.....

you have a trojan on your system most likely. have you run a full system virus scan ? run adaware and spybot ?
