Attempted robbery of my bike; caught the son of a bitch in the act...

In his mind, it was a potential robbery. For all he knew, when confronted, the "thief" could have resisted and offered violence.

At the time, possibly. After the fact, as it pertains to law enforcement response, no, because the thief did not cross that threshold.

Allot of cars have electric fuel pumps near the gas tank. There won't be gas flow through the lines leading to the engine in these systems.
Heh was allot easier with mechanical fuel pumps :D

Definatly sounds like hit & run not theft attempt.

For stealing a bike, you bust the steering lock and hotwire it, or pick it up and throw it in a van.

Thanks for all the feedback, definitely agree that it seems more plausible now that it was knocked over and then picked up. Although it's odd, there is no dent or anything on the right side of the bike, and the bike would've had to have been pushed down over the kickstand so you think that the car would've had to be going sufficiently fast (enough to leave a dent or a scratch on the right side). Also it's weird that the left indicator light on the back wasn't busted, which is VERY flimsy, but the cover of the back tail light was busted.

Why would someone siphon gas from my bike? Is this known to happen?

And in regards to robbery/theft, I wasn't aware of the technical differences--theft it is then. Although I was indeed expecting to have to confront the guy.
