Attemted theft

As much as it pains me (literally) I carry a 30ft long chain and lock with me if I'm not riding to work or a friends house.

I've had multiple people comment "It's not that serious" but they don't ride bikes so I don't expect them to know about our lifestyle, lol.

Is the chain actually 30ft long? Because if it has any sort of strength to it, that thing has to weigh 70+lbs. why not get one of the moto specific shielded chains? They're only 4ish ft long and designed to slow thieves and not scratch up your frame/wheel.

Seriously.
Might as well drag your own fire hydrant around to chain it to.
There is such a thing as overkill.

I probably should get a real disc lock, but I use my Krypto Evo Mini U-lock. I figure it is small enough to keep the specialty tools from cutting it.

When my bike is out of sight, I use a NY Noose Chain to secure it to a post. That's a pain to carry but it seems to be working.

Substituting 'chain' for 'steel braided cable':laughing

You know - this isn't a terrible idea.

If you made up a small note-card with the facts, something like:

Hello fellow motorcyclist,
on 7/29/14 someone tried to steal my Triumph Speed Triple parked nearby between the hours of 8 and 2.

The bike was damaged but the criminals were unsuccessful. If you noticed anyone fooling around with my green bike on Tuesday and you have any details that could be handy, please drop me a note at: email.com

Otherwise, PLEASE remember to secure your machine to deter the thieves that steal our bikes - and ride well, hope you are having a good summer.

yer bud,
SL 29

That's exactly what I did yesterday. Left one on every bike in the area (about 20).

Something I forgot to mention on the first post: as I rode home from the attempted theft on Wednesday, the check engine light came on. I haven't ridden her since, and today I inspected after work and can't tell anything except coolant is at the Min level and wasn't on Monday. All fluid levels otherwise look fine, there are no leaks, and the cables and wiring all look good.

Do you think the light came on because of the ignition being messed with? Or do you think maybe they messed with the bike in other ways?

I need to drive it to the shop for insurance inspection and don't want to cause further damage.

Thanks for all the support!
