Brona rode outside her previous geographic zone today;
previous rides had been in our neighborhood, Mt Hamilton Calaveras Metcalf.

Today was San Jose to Marina. We have a great two lane twisty route that has only 5 miles of freeway. The Elkhorn Slough bit has new tarmac! It was rather spectacular. Elfin rocked it. Tomorrow we do the reverse.

Today was her first actual freeway.

Baby steps, though some disagree with me training her on Mt Hamilton rd

Gotta start / progress somewhere. Took me about a month or so before I was able to (nervously) try interstate miles. Then I moved to Cali a few months later and I was like, woah, lane splitting, woah, hill starts, woah goaty back roads. Now I just go wheeeeeeee!

I was on the freeway at 15-1/2. That is where I found out how fast an RD 350 was.

There is "baby steps" for the wise and "fucking lets do it" for the young.

I did the freeway at 13. I fit right in with a dark shield and almost adult height. Happy it was just a short blast on my XL250.

I remember my first time on the freeway as being a calming experience. After riding in the street and dealing with traffic, stop signs, left turners, etc it was great to just get on the freeway and ride unimpeded. I could shut off a lot of my "alert functions" and just cruise.

And this is why my parents were all "not under our roof" when it came to motos. They'd spent enough time in the ER with me compliments of mountain bikes :laughing

Different bike, but other than that small detail we had identical experiences.
Side note: M/C learners permit on my 15 1/2 birthday at 8:30am.
First ticket on the books was the same day at 9:45am
True story.
Ah....the mid seventies....

:laughing

I was at the DMV doing my thing right at 15-1/2 too..!!

I did not get my first ticket until I was 16 though.
