Hey y’all, this is Rudy a.k.a. rude fish. I’m back after a hiatus of writing and decided on my 65th birthday that I’m gonna get a new bike and start doing track days from now on. I just picked up a 2024KTMRC 390 from Gilroy motorsports on Sunday and rode that baby home today. The courses that I enjoy most is Laguna Seca.

Congratulations!!!

I came on here to start a new thread, but I'll just tag on to yours.

My last track day was 2015. After an almost 10 year hiatus I've decided that it's time to go back. I bought a 2024 RC390 last night to be my track toy. I'm going to buzz around and pretend I'm 16 and in Moto3 (I'm 56).

Here's to getting back.

Unfortunately I'm down in SoCal, so it'n not too likely we'll cross paths at the track.

Sunday was my first track day since I broke my wrist last April (I checked- it had been 51 weeks since my last time on the track).
In just that year I’d gotten really rusty. It took me all morning to start to feel as if I had any idea what I was doing.

So my best advice to the two of you is treat it as if you’d never ridden the track at all before. Admit that you’re noobs and don’t try to prove anything to yourself.

I'm treating it like I'm starting from scratch. That's why I bought the RC390. I just signed up for two days at SOW in April in C group.

On my last track day I was running fast-ish B group times with an occasional lap in the slow A group territory. However, I wasn't very good at it. I'm re-thinking my approach entirely.

If you have a camera, run it and review laps later in the week, IME.

Also, download the Harry’s Lap Timer app and run it during your sessions. It’s amazingly informative.

Great to have you guys back on track. Riding smaller bikes is a great idea, gives you more time to think, and starting from scratch is actually a great opportunity to reset your riding and end up much better than you were before. I got back on track 12 years ago after a long hiatus, went back to school and started all over again. It has been a great time and I look forward to seeing you guys at the track!

I went to my first FunTrackDayz event last year and they gave your free lap times via https://fp1laps.com. At tech inspection a guy puts a sticker on the front fairing similar to the A/B/C group sticker, except this sticker has some special tape or something that can be picked up by a transponder? No idea how it works but it works. Did I mention it was free? I don't understand why the other trackday providers don't offer this....

probably something to do with it becoming a timed event and related various insurance policy issues that can arise

The nice thing about Harry's Lap Timer is that it gives you WAAAAY more info than simply lap times. it shows times in sectors, acceleration zones and deceleration zones, peak speeds in between the corners and at the apexes. It'll also put together a virtual best lap, with your best segments pieced together.

But yeah, the little timer stickers are cool.

Welcome Back Rudy! No cars to turn left in front of you on the track. But, I am still defensive because we are only human and machines fail, too.

If you would like to break the 390 in, the Kart track at Sears is open every Monday for full or half days. Half days are $60.

I will be on this,
