Safety plan to ban motorcycles being considered in England
By the Staff of Clutch and Chrome
February 29th, 2008

British bikers and action groups are preparing to battle a controversial Swedish road safety policy to ban motorcycles being considered by English politicians.

MPs are set to discuss 'Vision Zero', a campaign with the goal of eliminating road deaths completely. It has already been adopted as an official policy in Sweden and Norway.

However, none of the visions supporters its backers can explain how its goal can be achieved while motorcycling is permitted. Claes Tingvall, the Swedish architect of Vision Zero, has said there is “no place for motorcycles” in it. He recently said motorcycles presented a “challenge”.

The British Government will discuss whether it should be adopted by the UK from 2010, when current road casualty targets expire.

Stephen Plowden, advisor to influential road safety group the Slower Speeds Initiative, has written to the governmental committee stating bikes over 600cc should be banned.

Riders and action groups are worried about the vision “gathering a head of steam in the UK” according to the Motorcycle Action Group. They are describing the plan as 'wacky road safety measures'.

If this is a repost, oh well, repost nazis do your stuff. I did a search for motorcycle ban and ban motorcycles and didn't see this article.

like that is will ever happen.

too much money is involved for them to banish motorcycles

Wow!! England is the Mother country of motorcycling!

Even a vintage Triumph/Norton would be too big. :wtf

Sounds like a bunch of fear mongering to me.

a lot of countries have limits on bikes, hp, and which ones you can ride.

Can't believe it's already happened in Sweden as the article is implying.

Scary stuff...

I call BS too. That would not happen here. AMA would have their law dogs all over this

never say never! they outlawed offroad three wheelers some years back the manufacturers just build four wheelers.

Never under-estimate the tenacity of the Brave New World crowd. If this goes through in England, I would expect to see an attempt in this country.

Will never happen in the U - S of A.
NEVER.
The corps will pay the upper echelons to ensure this.
And if they don't play ball, they will fund another's campaign that will.

Here it is again, different country..

Or maybe just ban in parks on weekends..

Or more on just an outright ban country wide..

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/02/21/nmotorbike121.xml

The problem I see is not that there will be an outright ban.

The problem is that "they" bring an issue like this up, discuss the horrors of motorcycling on a huge scale in the public arenas and then say something like "Ban motorcycles."

The public has already heard so much propaganda that they are convinced there should be "something" done so when there is a compromise between the motorcyclists and the ban the bikes crowd, the bikers get some sort of severe restriction shoved up their (well you know) and it was that or take the ban.

The public is all happy because something was done to stop all those deaths (and the loud noise and the stunters and the hooligans who have been pissing them off for years and getting away with it) and the bikers get to have fun on their new 400cc 25hp government approved sport bikes. (which they can't ride in the twisties on weekends because they aren't allowed there. City and highway transportation only on work days only than you.)

Hey it could happen.. I hope not.
