bar end mirror illegal?

OP: I'm not Jewish, but let's not use ancient stereotypes like you did. They serve no good purpose and are always wrong. They serve only to perpetuate bigotry and racism.

Thank you.

What's up with that?? I'd expect more from a Moderator. It's simply a reminder to avoid the use of stereotypes and bigoted and oft-times racist words and expressions. There are many inappropriate phrases and words that are used by some people to describe and label others. There really is not place for it in society. What I said was a gentle reminder. I don't know if the OP even understands the history behind the expression he used. And I'm sure you know of many more derogetory words and expressions that can and are used to describe blacks, hispanics, Italians, the Irish, etc. Even cops.

Suggesting I get a thick skin and I just leave is rather harsh coming from a moderator. And I might suggest that your skin is too thick. Perhaps due to your life experiences as an officer of the law. Bigotry and racism has periodically triumphed in this world precisely because to many people had thick skins to care. Perhaps you are of Irish decent. Think of the atrocities and hate commited against the Irish in this and other countries in times past. Or the Italians. Or the Polish.

I suggest you rethink your position.

ST Guy,

I think the point MM4L is trying to make is that people shouldn't count on moderation, but learn to click the next thread button, ignore other posters or otherwise be prepared to deal with offensive content on BARF.

It's impossible to keep everyone happy, and no one moderation standard can ensure that everyone isn't offended, so often the best strategy is just to roll with it and move on.

I don't think he intended to suggest the content was appropriate, just inevitable.

the dot rating applies to what can be legally be sold in the US for street usage. not having a dot rating does not mean it does not meet the requirements, it may just mean it has not been certified, and i have never heard of a mirror being in this category, just helmets.. except that the glass in the mirror may be dot certified.
i have not ever seen a mirror with that on it but some mirrors from the EU are not dot certified or considered street legal. the mirror has to be a certain diameter to be able to allow you to see 200 feet behind you, and be able to actually tell what you are seeing. i don't know what it is. some rizoma mirrors are not street legal, and rizoma states that on the web site. any round mirror of 2.75 - 3.5 inches should be fine... i think they have to be at least about 2.5 inches in height/diameter.. most stocks are 2.75 - 3.5. x 3.5 - 5..

maybe he was messing with you... get a tape measure and test the theory and inquire with the manufacturer if the mirror glass is dot certified.

Well, his choice of words could have been much better. To suggest I leave and that I won't be missed is just plain rude from a moderator. And yes, one is going to find offensive content on a board like BARF. Or any board or forum for that matter. But that doesn't mean that comments as that made by the OP, however innocent, can't or shouldn't be brought to attention. Suppose the OP made a comment about African Americans all be lazy and shiftless? Or referred to the Irish as lazy sods who take welfare and make babies? Or? Or?

Sad part of society today is that too many of the wrong things are tolerated. And to have a moderator tell me to leave and I won't be missed is tacky. And perhaps even shows some of his/her own bias and prejudices. How many of you reading this have been the object of racial or ethnic stereotyping? Or perhaps your family or ancestors have? And how many of those reading this have had the balls to speak up and out against such things when they happen?

Finally, remember that I gave the OP a gentle reminder. I did not jump on his ass.

I remember when I first read the OP's post that he used the "little bit of a Jew" line, but I didn't feel it necessary to give him a gentle reminder, either. I'm not necessarily offended, just surprised.

I debated whether or not to bring it up. But I figured that many people aren't aware that some words and phrases are slights and slurs against various ethnic and racial groups and evoke feelings deeper than the words themselves. So, I figured a gentle reminder couldn't hurt and might actually help. I sure as shit ain't perfect, but I do try to help out and make a positive impact on society. This might include my reminder to the OP, tutoring adults who can't read, donating to various charities, stopping to help someone stranded by the side of the road, volunteer medical support at the races, caring for someone I happen upon who is hurt in an accident, offering a simple kindness to someone who obviously could use one. The world is a tough place and anything we can do to help others helps us all.

I vote for more ST Guy, and less bullshit name calling by a bunch of non-contributing douchebags.

I guess I can just go back to the Garage, where everyone is usually helpful, rather than slanderous.

Oh, absolutely, it did need to be phrased better. I was just saying, I really don't think he intended for it to be as harsh as it came across.

And here we agree, on both points.

I don't think your post was uncalled for, but I didn't want to see things escalate -- you both contribute quite a bit to these forums. :thumbup

Well, to be fair, only one person was name calling and that was just his idea of fun. I guess.

well, the main topic is being sidelined.
what exactly does one need to see 200' away to justify that they're mirrors are good enough for road use?

I've got the small CRG mirrors, and a 200' tape measure. I'll let you know what I can see at 200' when seated on the bike. I'll try to take a pic, but that'll probably difficult.

Back to the mirror:

Here's a quote from the code posted earlier:

shall be equipped with mirrors on both the left-and right-hand sides of the vehicle so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway through each mirror for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of such vehicle:

It doens't say what kind of view, how wide or tall a view, or what you should be able to discern. Therefore, any mirror, even a tiny bicycle helmet mirror would technically be OK. However, there are practical considerations. I'd want to see the full width of the road and a bit more from each mirror. And from the horizon down to fairly close behind me. All without moving my head around.

I don't know how big the OP's mirrors are, but maybe you can compare them to those on Ducati's Hypermotard. Those mirrors are actually pretty darn small. And to be sold in the USA, the mirrors and the rest of the bike would have had to pass all DOT regulations. And if it passes DOT regulations, I think those superceed any California regs. 'Might be wrong, though.

If you're riding a big thumper or one of many V-twins, I don't care if your mirror is as big as the Hubble, all you're going to see is a whole lot of blurry...
