I just figured I'd start a thread because it always gets mentioned in the stolen bike threads.

Is it something we could really do? Should we go all vigilante style and deliver beatdowns to scumbag bike thieves, or team up with law enforcement and try to get arrests, maybe leading to theft rings? Or is it just a pipe dream?

Leave it to the cops!

They do bait cars, not sure about bait bikes.

I have a sweet Crosman pellet rifle with a scope that I would never ever shoot anyone in the neck with.

Love to see a nice looking bait bike put together with a self powered GPS transponder buried deep someplace on the bike. Santa Clara County has a task force called Regional Auto Theft Task Force or RATTF. Alameda County's is called Alameda County Regional Auto Theft Task Force or ACRATT. I'm not sure about San Francisco. I'd start a conversation with one of the three counties.

A good idea that no good can come from.
Leave it alone.

good luck !
( I kinda doubt any LEO's would really appreciate the effort though )

A very satisfying thought that will lead to the vigilantes going to lockup.

Read up on the do's and don't of a citizens arrest and then maybe just maybe something good will come of this.

Baseball bat to the knees and a ball peened hammer to their hands. Even if they go on disability for the rest of their lives it is cheaper for society and the State then the cost of constantly locking them up and all the damage the culmination of their crimes would cost over the course of their lifetimes.

oh shit, do I sound like a Trump supporter? :twofinger

Nah, much better to lop off a hand like those 'animals' do in the middle east, right ?

Or - do something like the electric prank bait bike but just rig it to blast dye and mace into the face of the guy that tries to start it ?

How about you lock up your shiny toys, especially when you're parking them on the street?

It's fun to think about but this IS California so you'll probably be sharing the same cell.

So the OP is suggesting we publicly admit to attempting to be violent vigilantes?

Hey, how about you ride around with a gun enforcing laws while you're at it.

Not sure if trolling. Locks get cut all the damn time.
Might as well leave your valuables sitting on the dashboard of your unlocked car too.

Cutting through those high dollar locks is more difficult than you probably think. You're not exactly dealing with the premier criminal masterminds of the region. Mostly they just don't want to get caught.

Entrapment is overall a shitty thing. There are already countless crimes being committed, why create a new one? All it'll do is to weed out the dumb thieves and make smart thieves smarter. And besides, it's curing the symptom instead of the disease.
