Some of you may be aware that many BART stations have dedicated bike lockers. These are large metal or plastic cages that allow you to lock your bike inside an enclosure. The fee for using these lockers is oinly $0.03 per hour.

I have been using a bike locker at the Dublin/Pleasanton station for the last 8 or 9 months. I lock my helmet and jacket in the locker so I don't have to cart all of my safety gear on the BART train when I commute.

I recently received an email from bikelink.org saying that it had come to their attention that I was storing non-bicycle related items in the bike locker. I called the head of operations and ended up having about a 30 minute discussion with her. She was very, very nice. Basically, some bicyclist saw that the storage locker contained my motorcycle gear without an accompanying bicycle and called to complain.:rolleyes While the head of opertaions agreeed that it was laudable for me to try to NOT use a car to commute, it was technically in violation of the use agreement.

So, I said, "As long as there is a bicycle in the lockjer with my gear, everything is okay?" She said, "There needs to be a human powered vehicle in the locker. This can be a bicycle or a wheelchair or a unicycle; as long as it is human powered." I asked, "So any size bicycle works." She laughed and said, "Look if you have a kid's bike in the locker with your helmet and jacket then you're in compliance." I responded with, "So if I use the locker during the day for just my helmet that's not okay, but if I shove a kid's bicycle in the locker and then reserve the the locker for the entire week, not allowing any other person to access to the locker, that's okay?" She said, "Yes, as the rules are written. That's okay."

SO, I'm buying this to keep in my bike locker:
