Bay Bridge Commute

R1100R, finally
I commute on the BB every day. A lot of other posts talk about the left lane being for going really fast or passing only. Do you guys think that's true for the BB, where you have to start or end in a certain lane because of the on/off ramps?

And, I get on in the car pool lane on the far left, but get off at Folsom on the far right. Am I better off staying in the left lane until I'm past the tunnel, etc., or should I get over right away?

What do you guys do, other than pass me and wave?

When I used to commute across the BB, I usually began to head over to the right-hand lane after exiting the T.I. tunnel. It all depends on weather and traffic conditions, naturally. Use your best judgment to make the call.

Stay in the left lane until the last minute then dart over. It will save you 15 seconds. I don't care which lane you are in, as long as you are watching your six. Don't sit on the right side of the #1 lane if you are not passing cars please.

once thru the Yerba buena tunnel I don't like to be in the right lanes, I generally hang in the #1 lane, I'll split forward till I get in an open spot and then cruz.
If your headed to folsom street you might try staying left and exiting at 5th street.
the 5th street off ramp is pretty mellow compared to fremont or 9th.
I find weaving on the BB doesn't get much in forward motion and increases the chance of getting hit.

I'd watch my six, and maybe I do, but what does that mean?

If I see other MCs behind me, and I'm holding them up, and I usually am, then I scoot over to the other side of whatever lane I'm in so they can split past me. I am always cheered that EVERYONE gives me a wave. (So that scooter waver from the other thread doesn't have to worry about me.)

Word. (and/or OpenOffice)

Oh, I get it now, watch your six, like watch my six o'clock, behind me? I do, I do. I got four, count 'em, four mirrrors. Almost like the guys from Quadrophenia. That's how many mirrors I got, so I can watch my six.

I move from the #1.5 lane to the #4.5 lane about 1/4 mile from the Front St exit.

I love my BBB! (Bay Bridge Brethren) I see a lot of the same people every day. I haven't seen the woman who rides the cruiser with the "Girls Kick Ass" sticker on the back of her helmet in a while though. We would have this conversation that would last a few seconds at red lights, and then continue the next time I saw her.

Is it a red Vulcan with leather saddlebags? Does she have a blond ponytail? That used to be my bike.

I usually stay in the #1 or #1.5 lane as far as the third tower, then gradually drift over toward the Folsom exit. I've only missed it once in 6 months.

I see the same people day after day too. Except today, obviously.

+1, stay left until the last superstructure then bomb to the right. Watch your 6 for faster splitting traffic.

I am on the BB every weekday except when it rains. I have been doing this for about 5 years. My belief is that most of the cagers have gotten used to our presence and give us room to split safely.

I see a lot of the same bikes, depending upon what time I travel. I also use the left commuter lane up to the toll plaza, then stay in 1, 1.5 or 2 so long as the traffic allows decent movement. Occasionally I shift over to 3 or 4, but only if the F'n buses, box trucks, and other lane hogs prevent me from splitting at 1.5. I generally split at a fast enough speed that only a few riders get antsy behind me, and then I slide over and waive them by. Since I ride one of my vintage Kawasakis, my handlebar width prevents me from splitting certain situations when a sportbike could get through. Just be patient, and let me blast through when the gap opens up a little bit more. I don't want to be bumped under the wheels of that 18 wheeler.

I find the evening commute back to Berkeley to be more hazardous. The drivers are all on their cells phones calling their honeys, and are not focusing on the traffic around them. Also, if I leave the City after 6 pm, the number of intoxicated drivers increases with each minute. Yes, I can tell when a driver is driving impaired.

If you are just begining to use the BB for commuting, I suggest you pick a lane and stay there until you get the feel for the traffic flow. It is best to ride behind a small car, so that you can see forward around them easily. That, and stay away from anything that is labelled "AC TRANSIT", since those drivers own the bridge, and are entitled to drive in front of, and into, any other vehicle with impunity.

Waive if you see me. I usually ride my black 1980 KZ750, yellow helmet, and black and yellow jacket. I may be old, but I ain't dying.

Here's some pictures I took a few years ago.

ZOMBIE THREAD RISES FROM THE DEAD!

Well, I figure it's better to resurrect than to start a new one.

We need new pictures since the view is completely different... anyone have preferences for timeframe for traffic flow?

I have been finding myself pushing it close to 10AM so I can still make it through on the carpool lane...

Traffic flow? I just go when I get my ass out of bed and leave work when I'm done. I go East in the morning and West in the evening though.

The best times seem to be after 9 in the morning, although I am usually in the worst of it, between 8 and 8:30. In the evening usually right before 5 seems to be the best, with the worst being when I usually go from 5:30-6:30.

Monday and Friday mornings are usually the lightest traffic wise. With afternoon traffic being the lightest on Monday and getting progressively worse until the Friday afternoon clusterfuck.

I usually start on the right lanes and switch to the left somewhere around the first bend when going home. Going to the work in the morning I'm always on the left.

I reverse commute on my Concours every day but Fridays. 7am Eastbound, 4:15pm westbound. Follow, lead or wave. :ride
