Beautiful nature pictures

Duck hunting last weekend. Wish I had a newer iPhone that took better pics. That’s the moon.

I should hunt down a "how to make non-sucky moon photos on an iPhone" article someday. Most of my moon photos look like that too. Not quite capturing the grandeur I'm feeling at the time I took it.

here’s my lame attempt at a full moon pic with my iPhone 16 Pro—a screen shot from a video, which I read can maybe produce better photos/images of the moon. still struggling with that approach:

the video is able to capture some detail of the face of the moon, but I’m having trouble then producing a pic from the vid that I’m happy with. (pic is view to the east from SF, 10/26/2026, 6:30 pm)

my other “how to take a good pic with my iPhone” project is trying to capture a decent Milky Way pic.

I've got a 17 Pro. And a tripod with phone holder in the van. BUT I have yet to remember to try a milky way shot when I'm somewhere it would be possible! D'OH!

:thumbup

see if I can remember to try a Milky Way pic if I can get down to Tumey BLM this fall … I usually just crawl in the tent once the sun goes down. :facepalm :laughing

Dynamic range of a camera sensor is a few stops less than the human eye so you either get an over exposed moon or no detail in the shadows of anything on the horizon.

iPhones do a lot of internal self processing whereas a full frame mirrorless or dsld are meant to be post processed and actually require it to get the most out of them.

I have an iPhone 16 pro max and it can take decent pics in bright light but I don’t like it at all for night shots of any kind. If out and about and taking pics I’ll always have an APSC or full frame equipped camera. Still don’t rely on the phone if I see something interesting but admit it can often get the job done.
