ok, back on topic... carry on!

nice vid.. still makes me cringe seeing em blast down the track with no gear --

I took my nephew to the Scotts Valley car show/ police bike competition in summer. It was great to see these guys scraping pipes. Very impressive. Harleys, st1300's, and bmw's ruled. The BMW won IIRC.

Exactly

Not to mention location of the k-rail (outside of the high speed corner) and dirt/debris on the track, yikes~

Great stuff! It was fun trying the Eliminator at the Alameda County Sheriffs class. :ride

This. At least give them some gear to protect them when they are learning. I mean, that when an accident is most likely to happen.

you'd be hard-pressed to survive an impact w/ one of those guardrails even w/ full protection

but awesome riding either way

Cool except for the part at the end when Jason says that "on one of your rockets....you are not gonna out run these guys...."

I agree - if you go slower then 114 MPH. (Which seems slow when considering modern sportbikes...)

Its nice to have a city that will buy you a new bike!

It took us two years for DGS to fall flat on its face with the Kawasaki and now we're well over a year into the unknown for something to replace our crippled fleet.

On that track, they'll do a little better flat out but not much.

The Kawi on the other hand :ride

(if you happen to run across one :laughing)

I did a lot of research into this back on '03 and '04. I wanted to lobby the state for more funding for better gear. Initially I was greeted with skepticism, as I'm just an average joe and not an officer or family member - why would I want them to have better gear? Once they started taking me serioulsy, it was explained to me that their uniform code has specific guidelines, and all officers get the same uniform/equipment stipend - regardless of their assignment. I was told if they changed the uniform code to allow motor officers to get more/better gear (something like an Aerostich), they'd have to increase the stipend for all officers, which they were unwilling to do. The CHP union was also fearful that additional costs would passed along to officers, if they chose to get better gear.

After getting stonewalled in this manner (and being long before barf had a LEO forum), I stopped pressing. Maybe it's time to revisit the project? Especially since the state has so much spare change laying around that they don't know what to do with :toothless

Our uniform code is..... strict.

We do have our textile jacket now, but the one factor that everyone overlooks is the bulletproof vest. The vest feels like you're wearing heated gear, so anything you put on top of that just makes it worse. Unless its like in the 50s or 60s I won't wear the jacket.

I've heard there are talks of textile pants but I'll believe it when I see it.

I think he's saying that no matter how fast your bike is the CHP motor-cops probably have you beat on skill.

....and no matter how fast you might be, you won't outrun the Motorola.

The rider on the bmw was/is a very talented individual. And was having a flawless afternoon until he matched up with Eddiet204 who flat out smoked him in the top gun competition. Just in case you forgot that part. He rides a Honda! :thumbup

I find it ironic to see something like this on BARF. I ride in a one piece in the summer, and there have been times when I get off the bike and my face is turning purple from the heat. Yeah, I know I am overheating, but I am also riding very hard. There are other options other than wearing a cow on your back that won't make you overheat in the summer. But I also feel it should be up to the officer what they want to wear in terms of gear.

I bet if you go down chasing a suspect, and end up with skin grafts because of it, you would wish you had at least some gear on. I went down a long long time ago in a Johnny Rocket jacket. It was one of those synthetic jobs. It did a lot better job protecting me than my skin did. I still got a tiny bit of road rash, but it was better than my bare skin on the pavement. And it wasn't bad to wear in the summer. Remember, I am down in SoCal, where it's not uncommon to see 105/110 degrees from time to time. I still wear all my gear when it gets that hot. I like my skin and riding more than I like being cool(as in temps).

Probably an apples to oranges compariosn here but I'll throw it out there anyways. I need ear protection. Some cockpits are extremely loud, upwards of 110db because of wind noise. There are some guys who don't care, and buy the cheap Telex750 head sets because they are light. Then, there are guys like me, who get sick and tired of their wives telling them to turn down the TV and go out and buy the $1000 Bose noise canceling head sets. The difference between the two is night and day. I almost can't hear the wind noise. Pus, they work great for a commute on an airline when you have to fly to the airplane to drown out crying babies and such. So I guess my point is, if they let you buy some better gear, would you?

I would wear proper boots and textile pants all the time, and our current mesh textile jacket weather permitting.

I ride a 1098 in black leathers on Mines Rd in the summertime. I know what heat is, and I'm saying that being in a bulletproof vest, wool uniform with knee high unventilated boots is much worse.

There is a difference between riding for fun and riding for work when its hot out. I don't get to stop whereever and whenever I want, I'm not constantly moving and getting airflow, I have to stand our in the sun on 110* blacktop for up to hours at a time. You might ride for an hour and take a break for ten minutes, but I'll ride for 10 minutes and stand in the sun for an hour.
