Best liter bike for the twisties!?

My 1999 R6 is almost done... tranny is slipping and clutch is going out, and Im tired of a carbureted bike... I want to upgrade to liter bike but I want something that can handle at least just as good or better than my current bike... What do you guys recommend? Thanks in advanced! :thumbup Pretty much my question is which 1000cc or around 1000cc sports bike will be the best one for the twisties!?

Well... The answer is... first Gen (04-05) ZX-10R.

That piece of engineering crammed the 1000cc package into a 600cc chassis (actually smaller than a 600 in every direction but, height). It's the lightest liter bike (45 lbs lighter than the 09 R1).

To make it a super twisties, you need to do some set-up for that, because stock it's for everyone, not serious twisties. So.... if your up to riding a 1 gen ZX-10, and get one. Then I'll give the instructions for the set-up.

definitly the Busa the hell with high cornering speeds tip toe around the corners and make it all up on the straights and its a great commuter.

New: 08+ CBR1000RR
Used: 02-03 R1 for more commuting emphasis, 04-06 for twisties emphasis

<- biased

No!!! This!!! :twofinger

KTM 990 is obviously the best literbike for the twisties.

whoa! you want more bike, please consider this seriously::x

An r6 in good condition IS more bike than yours.

A new or newer R6 is going to be a LOT more bike than yours.

It'll feel like more cc's, even stock.

if your first bike EVER is an R6 & you're here to talk about it,
you just won the lottery.

the last thing you need is a 1000 as a second bike:shocker

it's beyond description.
these ppl in here r jumping on you bcuz you broke the 1st & most important rule of motorcyles.

start small, be easy, slowly work your way up, slowly.:ride

I hope you make the right choice and remember,
250-350cc is all anybody really ever NEEDS.

good luck!

ok,I'll bite. The problem with a literbike on the street is self-control,or lack there of,especially a young pup such as yourself.I know if I would've had one of todays literbikes at your age I wouldn't be typing this now.If you are going new cbr1000 or zx10,if used 2001-02 or 2005-06 gsxr1000 or 2006-07 zx10.If you are gonna do a lot of commuting cbr1100 blackbird. My suggestion for you would be the zx636 any year,I used an 03 636 to commute, ride twistiees, etc and was one of the best all around bikes ever.I got one because of my self-control issues, and I am prolly older than your parents (43):laughing
Get what you want, you're gonna anyways, but know this, literbikes aint no joke, they demand respect, don't give em that and they will give a good smackdown that you may not survive. You have been warned....Robbie

I'd absolutely agree with what you stated with a very minor exception , I was curious as to why you left out the 03-04 GSXR 1k? I like them better than the 05-06 models and they didn't have the frame recall issues. But then I ride an '04 ( chuckle).

And I'll AMEN that last paragraph you posted , personally I don't see why the OP doesn't just go with a 636 or something on the order of the '05 R6. But I've pretty much given up warning individuals like him about the liter class bikes.

Face it they're all way over the top for a street environment.

Well... you want speed. But with the R6 you got plenty enough of that - as is. However the bike may be tired... But the clutch slips, NOT the tranny (unless gears pop out or have trouble engaging). The bike is in itself plenty capable, not only on the road but also on the track. The bike may be "tired" as it may need stuff like doing a valve job or simply putting a new cam chain. Chassis wise, a good greasing bearings (or replace) such as swingarm, linkage, steering head and wheels. Suspension may be tired too..especially rear shock. Front forks may need servicing.

But it you want a 1000cc just to get something new and like the greater torque and more lineal engine, in all truth - any would do. The performance diff on the road is nil and on the track it is still subjective (as some go faster with on or another - and dont know why).

A good alternative is the gixxer 750. It is nice looking bike. You can lie and say it is a 600 :D and best of all it handles a LOT like a 600. You are basically getting World Supersport power but with more drivability than a bone stock 600. It is also not scary to ride hard (talk about track/racing)... just ride like a 600 - pretty much. BTW, not trying to sell you on the zuki, but that it is a good alternative.

In sum, any liter bike race rep will do. It comes down to looks, feeling and price. If you were to race one, that depends... as some like the feel of one machine over the other (lap times dont lie)... but then, it is also depends on time setting it up.. So, even in these cases it is a crap shoot. Dont know what "will work". Since you are not racing the choice is much more simpler.

first gen zx10-r is one of the nastiest liter bikes out there, not recommended for the OP since he is still new at this. The power on the zx10-r is just stupid fast and the bike is prone to some pretty bad headshake. You really need to know what you are doing to ride that bike well.

I had lots of miles on my belt and a couple years of riding experience when I got on an 05 zx10-r and that thing scared me shitless after I almost went into a tank slapper while exiting out of a corner. I would not ride an 04-05 zx10-r without a steering damper. With the 06-07 an ohlins steering damper comes stock but the 06-07 I think is a bit tamer than the 04-05 since it doesn't power wheelie as easy as the 04-05 model.

zx10-r is still a pretty aggressive bike to handle especially for someone new to liter bikes, it would not be an easy transition. I came off of a first gen 02 r6 onto an 06 zx10-r and it was night and day difference, so much that it slowed my learning ability because it was just too much bike for me.

bluenote I only left out the 03-04 gsxr1000 cause I don't care for their looks :p still awesome bikes

209manny that's what makes the early zx10s fun, that brutality kinda like driving finishing nails with a sledgehammer :laughing
