Best Shotgun for Home Defense?

Go shoot a ham with birdshot. It won't make it through. Now if you can't kill a ham with that, what makes you think it's going to do serious damage to a person?

That's the problem, the dude may not stop with #8. The vast majority of people, yes, it will stop and possibly kill you, but if the guy is wearing multiple layers of heavy clothing, is amped up on adrenaline and who knows what else, #8 may very well not do the trick.

In my case, I don't have to worry about 00 hitting a neighbor (at least, it would be extremely unlikely) and I could see not using it if you lived in an apartment, but #8 is definitely not ideal.

Ive shot Pheasants at 30 feet with #8 dropped em and then the fuckers took off running luckily the dog got them. I always clean my game and those birds were hit with a good load of pellets and kept going. I was serious before, #8 is good for nothing bigger than a Dove.

I think bird shot is brining anyone down in a hallway. I have blown pheasant apart with a 12 gauge using 9 shot. Inside a room I don't see it just bouncing off someone and them walking away. That one guy a few months ago was killed pheasant hunting and I am guessing they were using bird shot.

That being said I keep my leftover turkey loads in my night stand in case someone breaks in.

Well you'll be covered if you're attacked by turkeys.

30 yards or feet yeah, just like I am sure you have been peppered while hunting, but maybe because I have a small house, but I just think close range with bird shot would seriously mess someone up

What do you think happens at 3 yards that doesn't happen at 10?

Feet, ive been hunting birds since i was 8 years old and #8 isnt used for Pheasant hunting for a reason, it sucks.:laughing

I was using it because i was on a private club that didnt allow high brass, and pen raised birds arent as tough as wild ones.

I'll give you that, the ones I gutted with a shell were at a private club where the birds wouldn't kick up unitl you kicked them :laughing

I just think bird shot would drop someone form 0-15 yards, never tested the theory though

I hear you. If I were standing at one end of my hallway and someone blasted me with 2-3/4" #8, I'd be crying like a bitch at bare minimum and there's a chance it could even kill me, but 00 or slugs, etc. would stop me fo' shizzle. No doubt #8 would hurt a perp, but the point of a home defense weapon is to put a stop to their shit (ie, induce a dirt nap) ASAP.

Threadjack!

Anybody want to buy my Speedfeed III stock for the Remington 870? Installed once, but I prefer the rifle grip on my shotguns, $60 takes it.

#8 then the 00.

ones a warning the seconds a stopper.

I can't imagine using something potentially lethal (even if somewhat less so) as a "warning".

If you're going to point it at someone, mean it.

well, technically if they are still coming i have a slug in the number 3 spot.

shoot to kill first shot

BTW in the video of the guy attacking the police station, none of the cops were killed but the guy with a shotgun was.

I wondered about the first shot by the perp at close range after he jumped over the counter. That looked like it did some damage. He probably had lightweight birdshot in the cartridges and the barrel sawed off so the pattern spread immediately. :rolleyes

I like my old Ithaca 12g. pump w/ choke and buck shot. If it don't kill what's on the receiving end it sure will leave a bruise on the user end.
