No, you don't NEED to, it's just advised. You could buy a trigger lock and a cable for it and attach it to something secure, too.

You're required to have one at the time of purchase. You're not required to have one after the time of purchase, if you catch my meaning.
Nice thing about not having to have CA approved very expensive trigger locks?

They told me they used to charge $5 for the cheapie locks but so many people recycle them on the spot they treat it as a tiny bit of overhead now.

You can, on the other hand, get a cable lock with a combination. Lets say, combination is "000". You put it on "001" and you good to go.
