get a 690!!!! some dude just posted a rad ass one on c list for 9k... not saying i would pay that much but its one hell of a bike... get an smc... i love my sm due to the fact they are rare as shit and no one has them

I agree about getting another KTM 690. I have an 07 with 26000 miles on it. I have had several 700+ mile days where it was ridden close to redline almost the whole day. Best mix between long haul reliability and Sumo fun. Also a fun track bike. I had SPS build me a custom rear shock (mix of Duke and SM parts) that is fully adjustable and works great. Let me know what you get and lets go RIDE...

Ohh yea.. I'm pulling about 20hp more than stock with just a few mods too.. Wheeeeeeelies all day:)

Let me know when you want to go for a ride:)

That's the one :laughing

Remember: the curbs on the center island near University Ave at fucking tall.

...he loves it when there's pics of his bike on barf! i hope he didn't dent the akra full system...
and, noted: tall curbs near University that my xrr can clear! (well...i am assuming with stock wheels. i wonder about my xr650r with 17's??? challenge accepted.)

Interesting, I've read about people swapping their 690 enduro wheels for 17" and saying it made the steering way too quick. They had to kick out the trail which is adjustable on a 690 but not on most other bikes.
Without doing this the bike fell into slow corners too easily

People? Too Quick? Sounds like "people" that shoulda stuck with a Cruiser bike.

Some people prefer Quick.

Really, so there's no limit to how quick it should be?
Why not just make the forks vertical and not bother with any rake at all? I bet a steering damper would make it all good cause KTM doesn't know what their doing.

Dirt bikes have a lot of rake and trail. When you put a small wheel on a dirt bike, the geometry gets a lot closer to what street bikes normally run. Light weight bikes can be tucked in pretty tight and not suffer too much.

Did I say No limit? Did I say KTM doesn't know what their doing?

If You knew Chassis Geometry..Ya wouldn't make silly, Jump to conclusions.

But..doing that..Ya made my Ignore list...:laughing

+1 for the Husky 610/630 , unless you want to throw a bunch more money at a 690 for the same_damn_thing.

I've had them all. If you need to do any bit of distance.. the 690 wins.

No need to get hasty, I wasn't meaning to be rude. Although it may have come across as that.

You missed the point. If someone puts 17s on the thing, KTM has nothing to do with it and whether they know what they are doing or not doesn't come into play because they didn't make the modification.

And if you knew chassis geometry, you would know that radically altering what the factory designed can have negative or even disastrous effects. THere is such a thing as too steep of a rake.

I had a 690 enduro and although the engine probably could have pushed it to triple digits, the chassis was getting real unstable before that.
I would test it by trying to make some quick steering input and it was obvious it didn't like it. It wasn't near as stable as liter bikes I've had.
The bike was certainly manageable and no problems at freeway speed and surprising nice offroad for a large dirtbike. But switch to a 17" front and I bet it would be scary.
I know the SMC has a 17 front but it was designed for it.

Not the end of the world :rofl

+1

Isn't the 690 basically a small sport bike and a super big sumo? It seems closest to the best of both worlds. Way better handling and suspension (yall be on 580 lately? good lord what does CalTrans DOOO???) for CA roads than a sportbike. Tall so you can see in traffic like a dualsport. Yet can actually go 80 and not make you want to commit suicide after an hour?

Id get one, but way too much money for my poor self still.

Sorry. My post was pretty unnecessary. It is arguing the same point that has been argued for a whole page in this thread now.
