So...I'm gonna be racing AFM next year, but at the moment, I don't have full plastics on my SV.

What are my options for both plastics and mounting solutions that will avoid issues at tech?

hit me up

al checked out the fairings and say they rock!

Yeah, I'm just not sure what years I should run, and if I'm just SOL and will have to rig up the bracketry myself.

Well the good news is you have a lot of options for fairings with the first gen SV, the bad news is that's because nothing fits them very well. You will probably need to make some brackets for your uppers.

Check out some of the SV's next time you are at the track or a race to see what people have done. I run hotbodies for SV on mine, they're low cost and a decent fit. Required some work to get them on. Some of the SV riders run GXR fairings they look good too.

Thanks for the input. So basically everything is custom fab/fit, and it doesn't particularly matter what years i'm getting?

I already have the aluminum fairing stay, so that's one thing out of the way.

E-race farings

E race farings for $350 shipped to you. You can't beat that with a stick especially since most used sets cost that much. They have gotten decent reviews for quality and fit so go for it.

On the other side; you might also consider selling your bike complete and then buying a fully race prepped SV650 at the end of the season. It's usually a much better way to go and you have 3-4 months to sell yours. Late last season there was an '01 SV650 with GSXR 1000 bodywork and forks, penske shock etc. for $2500 at the last Infineon event.

Also, for what it's worth Sharkskinz are always the best quality but are roughly $500 more for the set. Your painter/body guy will love you for buying the best but other than that, it's all about your budget.

My bike is actually ready to go, minus the fairings and some safety wiring...I wouldn't want to have to go through another 5 trackdays worth of setup, revalving, and respringing. :laughing All I need to do is learn how to ride it faster. :rofl

I was wondering more along the lines of what years I should be mounting and if anyone had a source for brackets or the like, or if I'm left building my own.

I'll def. consider those fairings though, thanks! Any recommandations on years for a first gen?

My experience with eRacing fairings isn't all that great. The fit was horrible on the set I bought for my 07 RR and required a lot of manipulation to get them right. They're thick and not very flexible, and I had to grind them down in spots just to get the Dzus fasteners to reach through both layers of fairing.

They are cheap, but if I had to do it again, I'd probably spend the extra $$ on Sharkskins. One word of advice if you go with eRacing and paint them yourself. Spray the first coat really, really light as the paint doesn't adhere as well to their primer as it does to the paint itself. Go very light on the first coat at least.

Congrats Conan on your decision!

You've seen my bike, right? I have "hotbodies" and they fit good. The only custom mount I need is for the lower, and I just rigged up some brackets.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'd have an advantage in that all of the fairing mount points would be...err, flexible, considering i'm making them myself, so fitament isn't a huge issue.

Thanks for the advice on painting!

Stan, I have seen your bike...:thumbdown

:laughing

What year did you use? PM'd you about some other stuff as well.

Some of the 1st gen bodywork options use the SV650S OEM upper fairing mount points on the side. My bike came with Sharkskinz that had extra brackets from Sharkskinz that were screwed into the side of the frame (non OEM points). I replaced the Sharkskinz with some cheap ebay stuff and ordered the OEM SV650S mounting brackets for ~ $15 to use with the new stuff. My advice would be to get SV650 specific bodywork not GSXR bodywork. If you get the SV650 stuff all you need to know is 1st gen vs 2nd gen, year doesn't matter.

Don't do it!! Race nakid!! Don't fall into that mindless trap of "got to get bodywork". :rofl Then later in the season, when people are still snikering at your bike during tech, they will notice that your practice level sticker is higher than their's and they start to brown nose and say nice things about what a cool idea it was to use a front windscreen off of a different bike. Not that I am bitter or anything!!:twofinger

But in all honesty, it pays to buy quality stuff. I tried the cheap stuff and it is too much of a pain in the ass to make it work right. Cut this, shape that, sand sand sand.... ugg Look forward to seeing you out there, the more the merrier!:thumbup

If you want to see what nakid looks like, check out gotbluemilk.com or 4theriders.com, number 555. "You may not like it now, but wait till you drive it!!":ride

I like the E-racings bodywork, my husband just bought a set for his 08 R6 and it fit right up, no issues.

But they don't have a set for Gen 1 SV and I don't know if the gixxer set that will fit a Gen 1, (I've seen the e-racings gixxer bodywork on a gen 2 and it looked good). I tried to fit the set for Gen 2 SV and it was WAY too wide for the the Gen 1, I would have drug belly pan in the corners. I sent the e-racings back and ordered hotbodies. The hotbodies fit ok and cost much less than Sharkskins.

Get sharksinz, or get hot bodies/e race etc and spend a day trimming and fidgeting and fucking around. I'm on my third or fourth set of cheap fairings, always a PITA. Get sharkskinz. Hotbodies will blow up in a crash.

Thanks for the input, everyone!

I'll probably end up buying a cheap set because my money is worth more than my time. I'm ok with swearing, cutting, and refitting to get something to work right, if it'll save me 500$. If it does, then maybe I have a chance of getting cams and flatslides. :laughing Robbing peter to pay paul. :laughing

If you're going cheap then you probably already are planning to rattle-can it, but just in case: don't waste your money spending good money to paint crap bodywork. I bought the same ebay stuff that a few people in this thread have bought and while prepping it, chunks (whatever coating/layer they put over the fiberglass) have come off it that I have had to bondo over to fill in. So I'm rattle canning it, and expecting that more chunks will probably fall off after I've painted it.

Yeah, rattle can. I haven't crashed yet but I'm sure I will someday, no sense in having a beautiful bike to destroy. :laughing
