Best zombie/post-apocolyptic flicks?

Shaun of the Dead FTW!

They Live is also quite awesome.

I have both. :thumbup

I had a little trouble believing that people would think that tent camping is a good idea in a zombie apocalypse.

No No, it's totally cool if you tie a string between a couple of trees and hang some tin cans off them. This will give you pleanty of warning that a zombie is approaching :thumbup

My personal favorites

Mad Max:RW
The Road
Shaun of the Dead
They Live
28 Days Later
Book of Eli
The Walking Dead

*edit - i debated adding this one, but what the hell Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 video games.*

The Road!

The Road? Really? I thought that movie was depressing as hell. I think it's a good sit if you're in the mood for a bleak and ugly picture of the future, but there wasn't even any fun in that movie. It was a good watch, but I don't think I would ever bother to watch it again. I mean, after that movie I just felt grimy and cranky. I mean, more so than I usually do.

Exactly, it accurately depicts the most likely scenario of a post-apocalyptic world. A world in which you will feel grimy and cranky.

Most post-apocalyptic movies leave you with a good feeling, a feeling as though it won't be so bad. Not so with The Road. The Road leaves you with the feeling that it will be that bad.

that's why i liked it.

no fru-fru shit about how the survivors are all drinking margaritas and still living in Bill Murray's mansion watching movies (although i did think that was funny).

it really makes you think about what it'd be like to be a survivor. like, seriously. despite what many of us probably think of our personal prowess and ability to adapt and overcome the reality would probably look like The Road. horrible, grimy, bleak, depressing and utterly unforgiving.

:Port

oh, wait.... no beer in the future. :(

also want to give props to the original Planet of the Apes. i didn't list it because i watched it when i was 12 which i think is part of why it was so disturbing.

i doubt it'd have the same psychological impact or entertainment value now. but just thinking about it i still get a twist in my gut from the final scene when he realizes where he is. talk about having a bad day at the office.....

okay. sorry for post whoring. i'll go do something constructive for a while.

Yeah, that's a little stupid.

While I like to roll around in a Stryker, any van with metal grates over the windows seems safe enough to sleep in, at least to stop the initial attack.

If you want to be scared and not amused/entertained, just tweak your definition of 'post-apocalyptic'. My choice, and one of my all time favorite movies, is "Children of Men".

I want something to scare me not something like Shaun of the dead. Any recommendations?

I liked:

28 days later/weeks
Dawn of the dead (new)
Quarantine was ok and REC was meh

Ok, so you want more scary, less funny/campy.

The Resident Evil "quadrilogy" definitely hits the mark as a post-apocalypse zombie movie. Yet, this series hits and misses with me. Some of it is definitely good, other times I'm rolling my eyes. Definitely rent them all if you can. Worth a look. (#3 is my fave of the lot. gives new definition to the term "a murder of crows".)

Always a classic is Romero's original Dawn of the Dead, although it's not as scary as some modern flicks, it's worthy of mention

These don't fall into the zombie/post-apocalyptic genre, but worthy of mentioning:

Not exactly a zombie movie per se, but The Descent has a good amount of jump-out-of-your-seat moments and the things chasing them are humanoid, so I'm including it here.

If you can handle a little bit of campy, there are some good scares in Evil Dead II. This movie created a cult following after it's release and pretty much launched Sam Rami's (Spider Man) career.

"Children of Men" was really well done, and although I'm glad I saw it, I could never watch it again.

Dead Snow! Nazi Zombies??? Need I say more!
