I listened to depressing music when I was a melancholy* teenager...



*Depressed is too "clinical" a term....
 
I'm 62 and have always been out of step with my friends as far as music goes. When they were listening to the Stones and Deep Purple, I was listening to Yes and Genesis and ELP.
Things haven't changed. I still rock out to NIN, Devin Townsend Project, Rammstein, Eisbrecher, Tool and A Perfect Circle. Puscifer too. I'm an outcast . Dark, heavy music with some meat on it makes me happy.

It's disappointing when the particular sound of a band prevents you from liking them. There's a punk/metal band called IDLES that writes songs about a lot of the sort of things I care about, but I absolutely cannot stand their sound.

Good thing there's plenty of other music out there that I do like. And IDLES gets lots of support from people who do like their sound.

I think for most people, liking the sound rates far higher than the content of the message, so I can understand that. When the sound and message come together for your that is gold! :thumbup
 
I’m an old school bass head, so I do like a few of her songs. I also kind of listen to her stuff and wonder how she’ll mature as an artist. Winehouse had a great sound right off the bat. But there’s been others, like Madonna, that I just didn’t care for at first.

Personally, as far as Eilish goes, This is my favorite performance from her and her brother. (Who’s overshadowed often, but definitely a big part of her sound)

Which is why I listen to old Springsteen, early Leonard Cohen, and Amy Winehouse.
 
her music is ok. I feel like she's been put on a track similar to gwen stefani. start anti-corporate, anti-popular (but make popular music). then have a transformation into full on pop star. good luck to her.

Amy Winehouse is kinda eerie, because it's almost like she foreshadowed her own early demise.

Agreed. She was more like Janis than Billie Holiday. She had so much pain in her music and no resolution.

My daughter likes her. We saw her on Austin city limits iirc. Her audience is almost all pre-teen girls. All in all her "look" and attitude seems to be one that may offer a decently positive, or at least not negative, influence on those little girls' lives. I'd take her decisions thus far over Miley Cyrus's afa how she portrays herself to the youngins.

Yeah, trying to stay anti-corporate in the music biz is a tough row to hoe. One of my favorite bands has gone that route, won't play any gig with corporate sponsorship, and are very selective of the other bands they'll work with.

After 25 years they've made a decent name for themselves and can sustain themselves with the band as their primary income. But they're still not huge.
