Day 19 - Mt Lassen to Feather River Canyon

On the road by 9am. Stopped at the Visitor Center to ask about 89 thru the park and she confirmed it was closed 9 miles up. I learned from a flag man that they plan to open it by the 21st (2 days later)! I road up to the closure and snapped a few picks. I met some bicycle campers and told them the road was closed, but they said “not for us!” Bikes and hikers can go thru. On my way down I saw another adventure Rider going up, I waited a bit checking out an outcrop, but he never came back down, so maybe he pushed by the gate. I then took 44 to Susanville, which is a nice town I thought. Gassed up and resupplied at the local IGA supermarket (well stocked). I then went to Janesville planning on taking a connector (dirt) over to 70 because I wanted to ride the Feather River Canyon the next day. I asked a guy in a truck about the road and he said it was pretty rought “but you can make it”. I got to the dirt junction and while I was contemplating the gravel that looked pretty think a loaded logging truck came barreling down it, and given that I was by myself and it was probably 20ish miles, I decided against and went back to Susanville. I then continued along 36 to 147 to Lake Almanor. Past the lake, at one of the many one-lane roadworks I came upon a motorcyclist that had just got rear ended while waiting or the green light. His rear lights were gone and he was in some pain as he landed on his back, but he was able to continue. He and his lady friend (on a 250) were out of Grayeagle and had just completed a section of the BDR ending in Taylorsville (which is where my original route was also going to go). The three of us waited for the slug of cars to go by but I eventually passed them then turned south on 70. 147 was nice. I continued about 10 miles thru the Feather River Canyon to my planed campsite, but contrary to wait the forest service website said, it was closed. Fortunately the next one was open (North Fork Campground off Caribou Rd) and I found a pretty nice spot next to the creek ($35). Showers were two bucks but I didn't have enough quarters or dollar bills, so I took an bath in the creek, man did that feel good! Good cell in camp (Verizon), and used my phone as a hotspot for the first time, nice! Was able to upload all my gpx tracks to google drive.
The road thru Lassen opened two days later!
