Boonies Tour '24

Day 19 - Mt Lassen to Feather River Canyon

1725079607980.png

On the road by 9am. Stopped at the Visitor Center to ask about 89 thru the park and she confirmed it was closed 9 miles up. I learned from a flag man that they plan to open it by the 21st (2 days later)! I road up to the closure and snapped a few picks. I met some bicycle campers and told them the road was closed, but they said “not for us!” Bikes and hikers can go thru. On my way down I saw another adventure Rider going up, I waited a bit checking out an outcrop, but he never came back down, so maybe he pushed by the gate. I then took 44 to Susanville, which is a nice town I thought. Gassed up and resupplied at the local IGA supermarket (well stocked). I then went to Janesville planning on taking a connector (dirt) over to 70 because I wanted to ride the Feather River Canyon the next day. I asked a guy in a truck about the road and he said it was pretty rought “but you can make it”. I got to the dirt junction and while I was contemplating the gravel that looked pretty think a loaded logging truck came barreling down it, and given that I was by myself and it was probably 20ish miles, I decided against and went back to Susanville. I then continued along 36 to 147 to Lake Almanor. Past the lake, at one of the many one-lane roadworks I came upon a motorcyclist that had just got rear ended while waiting or the green light. His rear lights were gone and he was in some pain as he landed on his back, but he was able to continue. He and his lady friend (on a 250) were out of Grayeagle and had just completed a section of the BDR ending in Taylorsville (which is where my original route was also going to go). The three of us waited for the slug of cars to go by but I eventually passed them then turned south on 70. 147 was nice. I continued about 10 miles thru the Feather River Canyon to my planed campsite, but contrary to wait the forest service website said, it was closed. Fortunately the next one was open (North Fork Campground off Caribou Rd) and I found a pretty nice spot next to the creek ($35). Showers were two bucks but I didn't have enough quarters or dollar bills, so I took an bath in the creek, man did that feel good! Good cell in camp (Verizon), and used my phone as a hotspot for the first time, nice! Was able to upload all my gpx tracks to google drive.

The road thru Lassen opened two days later!

Day 20 - Feather River Canyon to Home!

1725081107427.png

Left the site by 8 am, I wish I had time lapped filmed my packing up because by now I had the process pretty dialed in. The canyon was spectacular! Stopped several times, including for a least one road works. At one stop near the two bridges, I walked to the edge and a swift (swallow?) dive bombed me multiple times, give a screech as it approached my head,

As I was climbing out of the canyon two fighter jets dipped into it below the ridge line and not much above me in elevation, spectacular! I waved at them, as they were only a few hundred feet away it seemed like, a guy passing in a truck going the other way had a big smile and gave me a thumbs up. I got to Oroville just before 10 and then spent the next 45 min deciding if I should go to Yuba River (and skinny dip like I did in college), Downieville, or home. I checked the temps in the valley and there were going to be around 90 that day, 100 the next and 104ish after that. So I decided to head home to beat the heat. Indeed the temps were nice until about 1, very pleasant. Looked around Colusa a bit (another nice town). Took 20 to 16 (which is a blast, following Bear Creek and then Cache Creek), a new road to me towards Mankus Corner (Pleasant Valley Rd) which was quite twisty - a good training road for a boonies tour lol. 680 and the bridge were the most gusty I have ever ridden it; still felt uncomfortable, but not bad!

Guinda - a cool drink as the temps started to increase

Final thoughts

Well, it took over two months to get this trip documented. I can appreciate N4teTheGreat's "document as you go" approach lol.

20 days (15 riding days), 2200 miles, 100lbs of gear (wow), followed more than 20 rivers. Had an absolute blast. Breaking down in the middle of nowhere by myself, but recovering, added to the confidence inspiring nature of this trip. I got my license in my early 50's and still feel pretty new, but that many hours in the saddle really improved my comfort level on the bike, especially on the highway.

Anyhow, if you made it here, thanks for following along. Hope to see you at a Rally one of these days.

agree with you about long trips being a good way to get comfortable riding a dual-sport. is your KLR a 2007? :ride

Thanks @SFMCjohn - its a 2005 but has 2006 plastics on in that I picked up on craigslist to replace the faded ones that originally came with it. A bit of a hybrid lol.
