Hey BARF, I have a request for you…

I’ve been riding on the street for a number of years, but this year I’ve decided in addition to street riding I would like to get some track time. Well as you all know I’m sure, track riding isn’t cheap (from tires to track day tickets to logistics of getting there, etc.). Since I am new to this world I do not what to spend a ton of capital buying myself a truck and a dedicated track bike or anything like that, but I do still need a way to get out to a few of these trackdays to see what all the fuss is about.

Anyways, a friend and I would like to attend the dates at Buttonwillow on July 6th and 7th but would need a truck to do so (or an SUV with a trailer hitch since I have access to a trailer). It would be a huge favor to me if someone would be willing to switch cars with me for that weekend so I could make this work (I have a 2010 Honda Civic Coupe to lend you so you aren’t stranded without a car).

I know this is sort of a big favor to ask of someone, since many of you in the BARF community do not know me. Yet this forum, unlike others, is very much a community feel where others will go the extra mile to help out a fellow rider in need.

If anyone would consider helping me out it would be a huge help. I know I could rent a U-Haul or something like that, but that can get expensive pretty quick. I am hoping someone can help me out of the kindness in their heart, but if you feel you would need to be compensated, let me know what you have in mind.

Obviously, if I ever have the chance in the future, I would pay it forward and help out another BARFer in need.

I would like to pick it up on 7/5, and return it either late on 7/7 or Monday morning 7/8.

Thanks in advance :ride

*EDIT: I should note, I am located in San Ramon, so the closer you are to the East Bay the more convenient :teeth

I have a small Toyota Pickup truck with two chocks and an extended cab. However, I need to go to Oregon right around that same time so you'd have to be okay with me putting a few miles on your Civic as well. Stupid question but... can you drive a stick? :teeth

EDIT:

If interested, shoot me a PM or email (address below).

Thanks Alan, but you could have just offered to let me borrow your Tacoma :twofinger:p

Why don't you just put a hitch on your Civic and tow with that? You don't need a V8 SUV to tow a trailer with a couple of bikes.

Thought has crossed my mind. But like I said in my first post, I'm looking to test the waters and do a few trackdays before I bother investing in equipment. I know installing a trailer hitch is not terribly expensive

Since you're too cheap to spend the $100 on a hitch, post in the trackday forum that you are looking for a ride up and willing to provide gas money. Borrowing a truck from someone you don't know is just a bad idea for you and the person who owns the truck. Especially if you're not even willing to fork out $100 to get yourself there.

:rofl

I expected that this might be the sort of response I received, so I came into this thread with a thick skin.

It has nothing to do with being too cheap or anything else for that matter. I simply want to get a few trackdays under my belt before I invest in anything that I would not use except specifically for track time.

I hoped that a BARFer would help me ease into the sport, but fully respect those that do not think it's a "good idea" (Thank you SFCootz for being cool enough to even offer so far :party)

I lent my truck to someone last December with excellent results. :)

I met him and his wife for the first time when I handed him my truck keys.

Why Buttonwillow for your first time? So many better tracks much closer and by the time you get down there.....far less expensive tracks too to be had.
Do you have $250 to cover everything you need to do a track day? If yes, then i would like to officially invite you for sept 14 and 15 or oct 8 and 9. You dont need anything but you, your bike, your gear and that $250 for an entire weekend of track fun. You have my number and i KNOW you have the right tires for the job too:cool:ride

Thanks Daniela. I'm actually doing Sonoma on the 30th of this month as my first date.

The reason I also want to do Buttonwillow is for a couple reasons. First, there are a few different people in the trackday classified selling seats to both days for a discounted price. Second, I am limited to weekend dates for now since I cannot take any more time off work due to my vacation scheduled next month. Lastly, September and October are so far to wait! :laughing

ill add some fuel to the fire. you dont want to spend $100 on a hitch, that you could sell at a later date, to find out if you like track days, yet you own a "track bike."

really dude???

OK, I'll bite....

1. The track bike is fully street legal, not a dedicated machine by any means. It's not uncommon to own more than one motorcycle.
2. Show me where you can purchase AND install a hitch for only $100.

BARF delivers again :laughing. *Recalls why I typically do not post often on teh BARF*

This is fun :party

I don't know why you guys feel compelled to be rude to someone who is AWARE he is asking a big favor AND offering his own car as collateral. If you don't want to help, why don't you hold your tongue? :rolleyes

Sorry 10 years ago I may have been able to help out, but I just can't afford the liability these days. Nothing personal, just too much opportunity for lawyers should anything go wrong.

You can get a hitch for < $150 on etrailer.com, its a bolt on, and with the receiver and wiring its gonna be a free shipping combo. Install will take 1-2 hours tops with barely any mods to your car.

Having a hitch is always useful IMO - I would not own a car without one.

The difference in gas gobbled in 1 return trip to ButtonWillow with an SUV/truck @15-18mpg if you are lucky vs your civic at maybe 28mpg is going to go a long way to paying for that hitch.

If someone steps up and is able to help you, great, if not ride-share or hitch on the civic would seem like great back up plans.

Yeah, just rent a truck and forget about the trailer. Going to Buttonwillow, its the difference between cruising at 70/75mph on I-5 or being stuck in the #2 lane doing 55mph with a trailer.
