Brace yourselves for this math problem on Facebook

I learnt it as BODMAS (Brackets, Order, Division, Multiplication, Add, Subtract)

With PEMDAS = 10

With BODMAS = 58

The bracket multiplication must create priority though.
10 is my final answer.

That's why it's poorly written. If it were written more clearly, there would be no debate. Dumb, pedantic nonsense to stir up shit. To me, it just makes whoever wrote the equation look like they don't know WTF they're doing.

In reality, it's not even an equation, I just see a series of arithmatic functions. It's one side of an equation. I guess. Really, it's just nonsense.

58. You resolve the equation inside the parens first, not outside the parens. In this case the parens just stand in as a multiplication sign. So, rewrite as 6^2 / 2 * 3 + 4 = 58.

For your next challenge: make a true equation using only the following: 2, 3, 4, 5, +, =. No you can't have another plus sign to write 2+5 = 3+4. Hint, you can only do it on a piece of paper, not a computer screen.

Is this ok?

now that's pendantic

it's an expression and to convert an expression to an equation just add =x

but I agree it's poorly written

Well, I get 58... the 2 and the (3) being so close together kind of messed me up. Algebra...it's such a pain in the ass. I'm sure it's all, like, way more complex and turns out to be e to the power of pi + infinity in some non-linear matrix.

Maybe so, but the way it is written is not acceptable. You need to be very explicit when it comes to actual applications of mathematical equations. Srsly, you would get bitchslapped for writing crap like this in the classes I took in college, not only in math but in engineering and science courses as well.

Be clear, don't allow anything to be interpreted in multiple ways and explicity state what you are looking to solve. Otherwise, it's just jibberish.

Yeah, I got 58. I am also mad because people use * instead of x. LOL, I'm old.

Answer is 58. If in the same tier (ie: multiplication vs division) you read it left to right. Multiplication doesn't always come before division.

Also the parenthesis in this instance isn't a real one. It should be treated as if it is a simple multiplication sign. Parenthesis only gets prioritized if BOTH or all numbers are inside it.

X is a variable. About 10 minutes of multivariable arithmatic will.cure you of using x instead of *

Yeah, yeah, I know, but I never used to see that. It was always x for more simple arithmetic and . or z(y) for algebraic or other more advanced formulas. I don't know when * started being commonly used, but I assume it was in the 90's when using computer keyboards for expression became more common.

:dunno

It is just a weird thing that always tweaked me for some reason.

ooooh. i see what you mean

the * has stood for multiplication in computer programming since roughly the beginning of time.

i'd blame microsoft/excel proliferation and user friendly (chuckle) spreadsheet programs in general for widespread adoption.

That's the whole point. They make the post and there are a few answers and you could argue many of them. Then it becomes an argument on the internet and somehow you get an advertisement or something related to it, you probably didn't even realize.
