All bikes back in those days took an insane (at least obsessive-compulsive disorder) amount of maintenance
tuning the ignition and carbs...Your buddy must not have been doing it right :laughing
 
By sticking a rag in the tank, he was doing it EXACTLY right. :x :rofl

Back in 80 something I had to bring my sister to SF General everyday for burn treatment on both legs following a mishap with her Yamaha. Second or third day we met a rugged man with a shattered ankle and knee. His BSA did that to him.
