Buying a house around here sucks!

Selling is very subjective and people will always see it very different.

Some aspects of this market just don't make sense and its going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

I lost one house and another on the same street came on the market. I was going to go to the open house and it went pending before the open house even happened.

Now to start baking cheesecakes for people to go with the offers...

And yeah, I am not going to let it get too me too much. If I have to offer above market to get something I would rather wait until all the people moving before school starts buy and settle and get something later. But there is no guarantee that it will cool off. The bay area is a land of non-sensicalness*

*I made this word up, I know.

I'd consider selling my house...for a cheesecake.....

Not just Bay Area. Any California metro area not in Central California's dust belt is super hot right now. I have seen houses sitting on the market and the owners RAISING the price by $200k :mad

All this craziness is making me look into buying land and building my own damn house myself!

Where in the bay area are you looking at? Price range?

Sometimes, the seller was a very important part of the neighborhood and actually cares about what happens to his neighbors following the sale. It's one of those little human things that isn't necessarily logical but it happens.

Editing in: Archi hit it about the same time as me...
I dig it. Admittedly, I've never lived in a close-knit neighborhood.

I'm looking in the south bay as far south as Morgan hill, mostly between there and south San Jose. <$550K

I think Morgan Hill would be a good deal right now. Tons of new construction, so the slightly older homes with larger plots of land are selling cheaper.

Unfortunately, there's a hole in your cunning plan. It's the land that fluctuates wildly in value. The improvements (i.e. the house) make up a much smaller percentage of the crazy prices around town. Or at least this is true of the cottages and bungalows I look at. Mansions might be a different story.

If you are not in the home building biz, good luck with the permits.

I would never buy in Morgan Hill to commute to the bay 5 days a week. Drive to qualify is lame and that is why traffic and the air is so bad.

So you're saying that it properties were priced relative to incomes that people would not have to commute such long distances? What a novel idea! Too bad that is not at all how it works...

bicycling 5-10mi to work vs. driving 30 miles does not make up for $300+/sqft price difference.

Owning one can suck too. Renting one is somewhat less risky. Somewhat.
Just say'in.

If I was smart I would have bought a damn double wide!

I love doing projects and working on houses. Drywall sanding is very therapeutic. I wouldn't want to do it for a living though. I would also love to build my own house from the ground up, but not in the cards for a while.

This.

You can get a helluva lot of house for half a mil down there. Maybe even look into some of the recent stuff over there by Monterey/Curtner, communication hill, or maybe Capitol expressway. We looked at stuff in that area and there was damn nice stuff for our price point, but we just couldn't deal with that goat fuck of a commute on 87. Even as short as that freeway is, it was just a tipping point for us.

I've already lost two in Morgan Hill in that price range. And I wouldn't consider 1500sqft 1970's "helluva lot". Still better than 1000sqft for twice the price.

Depends on a person I guess. Difference is 10-15 minute ride vs 1h+ (each way) seating in a daily traffic jam five days a week. :dunno
