Hi:

I'm getting close to the 20k mi. mark. So I just doing the maintenance. I was wondering tho, is the coolant for my motorcycle any different than coolant for cars? I have a 1999 Yamaha R6.

Thanks.

Short story short, it's the same stuff.

Remember to mix with DISTILLED water only.

not so sure about them being the same. There are different types of coolant for different cars.

Water Wetter would be the best choice for your R6! I was running it in my 2000 R6 and it kept the temps very low and NEVER overheated in the city!

water wetter works well, but don't use it with plain water in an ALUMINUM MOTOR, use it with coolant, mixed according to the label. (the label always makes me want to try that tho :twofinger)

aluminum will start losing metal FAST without SOME kind of corrosion protection in the cooling system.

With any anti-freeze, make sure it is for aluminum motors which will cover aluminum radiators. As to water wetter, it will work great with just water, because it does have a little lubricant. But it works even better when mixed correctly wth water and anti-freeze.

Avoid silicates, which are abrasive and can cause water pump seals to weep. The cheapest coolant at Kragen is silicate free, last time I checked. Unless you're doing track days be sure to use 50/50 distilled water/ethyelene glycol.
