Love the truck. Very mixed feelings about the paint. Do we know anything about what is going on there?
I actually do. This is an airbrush technique to do woodgrain. However, the person who did this implementation was reaching for some features that just didn't land.

Source: I have airbrushed some really good woodgrain that looks legit, I've done some that is "passable" as woodgrain, and I've done some that is muddy, lacks definition, didn't have a good plan for knots and placement and looked like crap. I would put this paint job in the latter category.

The technique is not terribly hard to do... it does take some planning to do it right.

Thanks fraz!! The part that actually wrinkles my nose the most isn't the wood grain. I have yet to see a "distressed" paint job that I can really get excited about. Somethig about faking a "patina" that just doesn't sit well with me. Real patina on the right car that's being used as the owner intended? Awesome, go for it. Have a blast and fuck it if it gets scuffed up a bit in the process. Fake patina on a car that obviously had a lot of work put into it? yeaahhhhh, not my bag. It just seems "dishonest" in a way I don't understand when it comes to an enthusiast vehicle. I'm probably a bit weird about it but, it just seems like a bit of a trendy fad for people who are more interested in what others think of their car. I'm probably over analyzing it. Real patina on a car you play with? Awesome. Middle of the road paint job on a car you drive and enjoy, also awesome. Super high end paint job on a car that's mostly a trailer queen? Ok, not my bag but at least it's consistent. I just can't compute the fake patina choice. On top of that the "wear" is almost always not right. Watch Adam Savage on "tested" talk about how to weather props authentically and practice on a bunch of stuff that aren't cars before you commit to faking the wear on a car. /rant :laughing

Yeah the fake patina and weathering job is an abomination too. First step of going for the old weathered look... don't use a high build clear on the thing!!! Even matte clears can change the effect enough to alter it but it is a smart move to protect the paint job from... ironically... the weather

Adam knows his weathering. If you want to see some of the best weathering, check out the hardcore scale model train painters. Those guys wrote the book on how to emulate so many conditions. And they never clear coat anything other than maybe a quick set with a little hairspray.

EDIT: It has been decided that this is AI slop.
